MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Miracles do happen, especially in a Catholic country like the Philippines.
Yesterday, Filipinos were blessed with yet another miracle. They have been praying all week, hoping that Filipina Mary Jane Veloso, along with eight others convicted of drug-related crimes in Indonesia, would be spared from execution.
U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, President Noynoy Aquino and Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao all joined in the chorus asking the Indonesian government to stop the execution.
The appeals fell on deaf ears. At dawn on Wednesday, the convicts faced the firing squad.
But wait, only eight of the nine convicts were executed. Mary Jane was spared and granted a stay. A miracle.
But the real miracle was that Mary Jane had already been killed by the front page headline news story in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Apparently, she was resurrected then granted a reprieve by the Indonesian government.
This made Pacquiao, a devout Christian, an even more ardent believer.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – For the first time ever, a Filipina has won the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for Advancing Women in Peace and Security in the person of Miriam Coronel Ferrer.
