MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Miracles do happen, especially in a Catholic country like the Philippines.

Yesterday, Filipinos were blessed with yet another miracle. They have been praying all week, hoping that Filipina Mary Jane Veloso, along with eight others convicted of drug-related crimes in Indonesia, would be spared from execution.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, President Noynoy Aquino and Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao all joined in the chorus asking the Indonesian government to stop the execution.

The appeals fell on deaf ears. At dawn on Wednesday,  the convicts faced the firing squad.

But wait, only  eight of the nine convicts were executed. Mary Jane was spared and granted a stay. A miracle.

But the real miracle was that Mary Jane had already been killed by the front page headline news story in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Apparently, she was resurrected then  granted a reprieve by the Indonesian government.

This made Pacquiao, a devout Christian, an even more ardent believer.

FILIPINA WINS HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON AWARD FOR TREASON

image WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – For the first time ever, a Filipina has won the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for Advancing Women in Peace and Security in the person of Miriam Coronel Ferrer.

Ferrer is the goverment negotiator for the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in the Philippines.

The award was presented by  Clinton and Georgetown University President John DeGioia at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. on April 22.

The day after she received the award, Ferrer was charged with treason before the Office of the Ombudsman in Manila for conspiring in the approval of the controversial Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) which complainants described as ‘unconstitutional.’

Also included in the criminal complaints were President NoyNoy Aquino, Senate President Franklin Drilon, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, BBL government peace panel negotiator Teresita Deles as well  MILF representatives Murad Ebrahim, Mohagher Iqbal and Ghazali Jaafar.

In filing the complaint, former Assemblyman and Immigration Commissioner Homobono Adaza and government-critic Herman Tiu Laurel cited the respondents as co-conspirators in promoting the approval of the of the BBL, granting the MILF more power and territory beyond the limits set by the Constitution. They said the BBL violates at least 11 provisions of the Constitution on religion, equal protection rights and promoting social justice.
Among others, they said the accord would redefine Article 1 of the Constitution granting part of the national territory to the Bangsamoro and powers of sovereignty which are indivisible.

Upon learning of the charges, Clinton, who recently declared her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, revised  Ferrer’s award to ‘Hillary Rodham Clinton Award for Advancing Women in Treason.’

PALAYAN, Philippines  (The Adobo Chronicles) – This is the first year of the 10-year Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between th Philippines and the United States.

Among other things, EDCA allows the Americans temporary use Philippine military bases. In return, the Americans will train Filipino soldiers to be better prepared and  skilled for combat.  International observers say that the agreement is in direct response to China’s growing presence in the region amid territorial disputes between the giant country and other nations in Southeast Asia.

Well, it turns out it was the Americans that received first-hand training in safety and security — from the Filipinos. And the Americans learned their lesson well.

Four American soldiers who are part of the Balikatan Exercises lost their personal belongings to thieves inside Fort Magsaysay in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija early Friday morning.

Based on investigation, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. inside the Exercise Relation Construction Building. Some of the items lost were mobile phones, shoes, and dollar bills, among others.

According to officials of Fort Magsaysay, it is possible that the thieves were children who climbed the camp’s gates.

That’s right. Blame it on the children!
