MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – While the rest of the world is still trying to figure out what exactly President Rodrigo Roa Duterte meant by “separating from America,” both China and the Philippines today announced a new bilateral trade deal that will begin immediately.
It is well known that China is the world’s largest steel exporter and the Philippines has been importing Chinese steel to the tune of about 1.2 Million metric tons per year.
Under the new trade agreement, the Philippines will double its steel imports from China.
In return, China will import 1 Million metric tons of pork and chicken adobo this year, subject to a 15 percent increase in the coming years.
The Philippines needs the steel to boost its infrastructure boom while China says that there is a huge demand for Filipino adobo among the Chinese people who just can’t perfect the art of making adobo.
Duterte told The Adobo Chronicles that the new trade agreement is reflective of a truly bilateral partnership which he said was lacking in his country’s decades-long relationship with America.
