SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Once again, on Good Friday, March 25, Filipino Ruben Enaje will allow himself to be nailed — literally — to a wooden cross as part of a bizarre Lenten rite.  This is his 30th time being “crucified,”  something he started doing in 1985 as an act of thanksgiving for surviving a fall.

Several other male penitents have also made this ritual an annual undertaking, along with dozens of others who participate in a different penitence of self flagellation.

This Holy Week tradition is  proof that in the Philippines, there is truly a separation of Church and State.

The Roman Catholic Church, short of condemning the practice, has discouraged Filipinos from imitating Jesus’ nailing on the cross.

In contrast, the state — in particular the Department of Health — is hands off in discouraging this fanatical religious practice.  Instead, it has issued yet another reminder for those who choose to be nailed to the cross this year to take tetanus shots and to make sure the nails used are properly sterilized.

Judge Sarah (Palin): Coming Soon To A TV Channel Near You, And Perhaps The Supreme Court

BILLINGS, Montana (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) –  Move over, Judge Judy. Move over, Judge Joe Brown. Here comes the newest courtroom judge — Judge Sarah. As in Judge Sarah Palin!

The former vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor has signed a deal with Montana-based production company Warm Springs to preside over a new reality courtroom TV that is scheduled to premiere next year.

Unlike Judges Judy and Joe Brown, Palin does not have a juris doctor degree. But Warm Springs believes that she has a variety of other qualities that make her perfectly suited to the job — a telegenic personality, wide appeal and common sense wisdom (yikes!).

But this is just the beginning of Palin’s judicial career.

The Adobo Chronicles  has learned from very reliable sources that she is being groomed to replace the late Antonin Scalia on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Now we know why the Republicans are insisting that it should be the next president who should nominate Scalia’s replacement, hoping of course that Donald Trump would be that president.

“It’s about time that we appoint a youthful pretty face to the high court,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said.

Not to mention another conservative voice — and a shrieky one at that.

CEBU CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – A Filipino broadcast journalist was ordered deported from his native country after being proclaimed “persona non grata” by the Philippines’ Bureau of Immigration (BOI).

The deportation order came just hours after the conclusion of the second Philippine presidential debate held in Cebu City last night.

Teddy Locsin, Jr.  used social media to criticize the debate, particularly candidates Senator Grace Poe and former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas.

Locsin said that the exchange between the two candidates was  “lousy” because they used “too much” Tagalog, even referring to the language as “inappropriate” for a debate.

Locsin said, “The sagutan between Poe and Mar is lousy because they used too much Tagalog, a language inappropriate to pointed debate, circular shi***.”

President Noynoy Aquino who always delivers his speeches in Tagalog, signed the deportation order.

English is the Philippines’ second language used by the country’s major newspapers and many news broadcasts including CNN Philippines.
