Torre De Manila: A High-Rise Building For Philippine Jail Inmates?

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Metro Manila’s prison system is in crisis — and has been for decades — due to inmate overcrowding that puts packed sardines and pig pens to shame. So is there any more room for those who will be incarcerated as a result of the current administration’s war on crime? Absolutely, if three Philippine senators can have their way.

Senators Tito Sotto, Leila De Lima and Manny Pacquiao are proposing that instead of building new prisons, the government should purchase Torre De Manila which is nearing completion.

Construction of the high-rise condominium building on Taft Avenue in Manila is on hold because of a temporary restraining order from the Supreme Court pending its final decision on a case brought before it against builders DMCI Homes.

Torre De Manila is known as the great photobomber because it diminishes, if not obstructs the people’s sacred view of the monument of their national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

Whatever the outcome of the SC Court case, DMCI Homes and its president and chief operations officer Jorge Consunji had said that the high tribunal’s decision will be respected.

The three senators, with the full backing of all of Metro  Manila’s mayors, believe that the government purchase of the 48-storey building will end the controversy while easing the horrendous jail overcrowding in the metropolis.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – For the very first time, beginning this August, the entire Philippines will have a 911 emergency call service similar to that of the U.S. and other countries, thanks to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.  As mayor of Davao, Duterte established the service in his city.

Globe Telecom Incorporated on Wednesday, July 27, announced it will charge an additional P5 per call on top of the regular voice charges for their subscribers calling the 911 hotline.

So, here’s is a possible scenario involving an emergency client using his Globe phone service:

-“911, what is your emergency?”
-Caller: “I’m having a heart attack. Please send an ambulance.”
(Beep)
-Globe: “You do not have enough load to continue with this call. Please load Five Pesos.”
-“This is 911, are you still there?”
(Silence)
(Another incoming call)
-“911, what is your emergency?”
-Caller: “My dad just passed away from a heart attack, please send a coroner.”

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It’s official — according to the Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DOT), the next Miss Universe Beauty Pageant will be held on January 30, 2017 at the Mall of Asia in Manila, Philippines.

Earlier, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said that he does not want to spend money to host the international contest, but was assured that funds to stage the pageant will come from the private sector.

DOT said confirmed that Japanese billionaire and chief of Tiger Resort, Kazuo Okada, as well as the country’s richest man, Henry Sy, will be among the private sector sponsors of the pageant.

Speaking from Las Vegas, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump also announced that if loses in the U.S. elections this November, he will buy back the Miss Universe Organization so that he could recoup the money spent in his presidential campaign.

Trump said that he supports the Philippines as the host and venue for the 2017 pageant and he hopes to make a personal appearance in Manila in January should he lose the election to Hillary Clinton.
