New Requirement For Filipino Nurses Entering The United States

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – No one knows exactly how many Filipino nurses are working in the United States. But if the state of California is a window to America, then the answer is: a lot.

It is estimated that 20% all the registered nurses in California are Filipino, a considerably large percentage since Filipinos number only 2.3 million (officially 1.2 million) out of a state population of 38 million.

What is the future of Filipino nurses seeking employment in the U.S., given President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ policy and his campaign against both legal and illegal immigration?

Well, there’s good news and bad news.

First the good news:

The Trump administration, realizing the high demand for nurses in the United States, has not closed to door to extending immigrant visas specifically to Filipinos.  As more and more baby boomers age, requiring skilled nursing services in and out of clinics and hospitals, America definitely needs more licensed nurses.

The bad news:

In addition to passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) in order to be able to work in the U.S., Filipino nurses applying for immigrant visas must either prove that they intend to marry a U.S. citizen within six months of their arrival in America or that they are already engaged to be married to a U.S. citizen. (Donald Trump sees this as consistent with his America First policy.)

Acceptable documentation could include email correspondence between the visa applicant nurse and his or her U.S. citizen partner explicitly showing a romantic relationship.

More points will be awarded to nurse applicants who can show an engagement ring received by mail from the U.S. citizen partner.

For now, and until the Trump administration voids same-sex marriage in the U.S., same-sex partner relationships will be recognized in the visa application process.

SYDNEY, Australia (The Adobo Chronicles, Honolulu Bureau) -Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has instructed Australia’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection to revoke the citizenship of Filipino musician Jim Paredes, sources close to The Adobo Chronicles confirmed today.

Paredes, a known supporter of ex-President Aquino and critic of President Rodrigo Duterte, is currently in the Philipines making the rounds of rallies and protests,  including last week’s commemoration of the 31st anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution that ousted President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

img_9390During the EDSA event, Paredes was video-taped berating a group of Filipino youth who were peacefully expressing support for Duterte.

Turnbull maintains that while Australia encourages its citizens to openly express their political views, it cannot condone any harassment or intimidation directed at young people who are the future of any country.

“Through his actions, he has brought shame to Australia and its freedom-loving citizens,” Turnbull said.

Paredes is a dual citizen of the Philippines and Australia.

Senator Bam Aquino Files Senate Bill To Rename EDSA Jim Paredes Avenue (JPA)

img_9390MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Many Filipinos have seen the viral video of musician and Aquino supporter Jim Paredes berating a group of young students for showing up and hurling a banner in support of President Duterte at the EDSA 31 commemoration.

Paredes seemed to think that EDSA belonged to the Yellow Movement (or is it the Black Movement now?), and that anyone aligned with Duterte or opposed to the Aquinos had no right to be at EDSA.

Impressed by Paredes’ passion to defend the Aquino legacy that represented EDSA and the People Power Revolution, Senator Bam Aquino filed a Senate Bill that would rename EDSA to Jim Paredes Avenue or JPA.

“No other private individual has shown so much commitment and courage to defend the Aquino Republic as Paredes,” the senator said.

“Renaming EDSA to JPA is appropriate and shows the Filipino nation’s appreciation for a private citizen who, despite renouncing his Philippine citzenship to live a life of comfort in Australia, is still very committed to fight for Filipino freedom, democracy and oligarchy, Aquino said.

Senator Risa Hontiveros has agreed to co-sponsor Aquino’s bill.
