MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In her first week as President Rodrigo Duterte’s designated Drug Czar, Vice President Leni Robredo has put forward a bunch of ideas which she thinks will improve the country’s war on (illegal) drugs.
She wants to stop Operation Tokhang. She wants her commitee to welcome a U.N. investigation of the war on drugs. She wants a bigger budget. She wants the Commission on Human Rights and the Faith community represented on the committee.
Asked by The Adobo Chronicles what the Church can contribute to the campaign against illegal drugs, Robredo said she wants to assign priests and other Church leaders to join law enforcement teams when undertaking raids on suspected drug dealers and users.
”Instead of dealing with the suspects using guns, I want priests or bishops to pray-over the suspects, hoping that they will surrender peacefully. This will avoid any violent or fatal confrontation with the police.”
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In her first meeting as Co-chair of the Inter-agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs (ICAD), Vice President Leni Robredo asked for data.
Her request seemed to contrast with her previous video message to the United Nations where she criticized her government’s war on drugs by citing “data” on alleged extra-judicial killings (EJKs).
Robrdo said she wantd data “because before today, I did not have access to the kind of data that you had access to.”
In responding to her request, the committee unanimously approved her request for data and loaded her iPhone with three years’ worth of unlimited data. It was a donation from Globe Communications.
Now, she will have no problems making calls or sending text messages on her phone, as well as having wi-fi access 24/7.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – The U.S. State Department has issued a new advisory warning U. S, citizens about traveling to the Philippines.
The State Department issued the advisory following the “60 Minutes” interview with online news source Rappler CEO Maria Ressa who described the Philippines as ‘the worst war zone she’s ever been in.”
The advisory discourages U.S. citizens — including Filipino Americans planning on a Christmas Holiday to the Philippines — from going on a trip at this time.
”We trust trust Ressa’s credibility, and we hope Americans will heed our advice,” a State Department official said.
