IMG_3963.PNGMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Millions of Filipinos were glued to their television sets yesterday watching the Senate hearing on the police killing of 17-year-old Kian delos Santos.

Amid the explosive privilege speeches and testimonies, TV viewers can’t help notice the free boxed lunch being passed around during the hearing.

Jollibee To Sue Senator Risa Hontiveros

IMG_3047.PNGMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Jollibee is suing Senator Risa Hontiveros after the latter dragged the name of the Philippines’ largest fast food chain into politics.

The lawsuit stems from a recent statement by Hontiveros seeking for a thorough deliberation on President Rodrigo Duterte’s recommendation for a 60-day extension of Martial Law in Mindanao.

Hontiveros said that asking for a martial law extension is not as easy as ordering from a fast-food restaurant. “While I look forward to the joint session that Congress will convene on this matter, hindi dapat madaliin ang prosesong ito (this process should not be rushed),” Hontiveros said in a text message on Tuesday.

“Ang paghingi ng Martial Law extension ay hindi parang umoorder lang sa Jollibee. Congress is not a fastfood restaurant,” she said.

A spokesperson from Jollibee told The Adobo Chronicles that their company is apolitical.  Our main mission is to serve the culinary needs of Filipinos here and abroad.  “We resent that Hontiveros is dragging our name in dirty politics,” he said.

Upon hearing of the lawsuit, former presidential sister Kris Aquino offered Hontiveros the use of Chowking, another popular fast-food chain. Aquino owns a Chowking franchise.

Senator Cynthia Villar Has A New Proposal For Philippines To Achieve Rice Sufficiency

IMG_2646MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – A few weeks ago, Philippine Senator Cynthia Villar proposed a ban on restaurants serving UNLI (unlimited) rice as a way for the country to achieve rice self-sufficiency.

But that didn’t go well with most Filipinos who always look forward to their free, unlimited rice that comes with their order of  inihaw, kare-kare, adobo and lechon kawali.

Now, the hard-working senator has a new proposal that she thinks would be a sure way to reduce rice consumption in the Philippines.

Villar is proposing that the National Food Authority (NFA) import individually-wrapped rice grains from Japan (see photo).

By making it laborious for Filipinos to unwrap one rice grain at time in order to complete their three to four cups of rice to cook, Villar says in that in due time, Filipinos will eventually reduce their rice consumption.

NFA Administrator Jason Aquino told The Adobo Chronicles that the importation of the individually-wrapped rice grains from Japan will initially cost a lot of money, but in the end, it will reduce local demand for rice.  When that happens, NFA will no longer need to import rice, even when local production is affected by weather conditions, Aquino said.
