Julian Martir: News Media Conned?

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Bacolod Bureau) -Did he or didn’t he?

A student from the ‘City of Smiles’ has received scholarships from 30 prestigious schools across the United Kingdom and the United States.

Julian Martir, a 20-year-old graduate of Negros Occidental High School (NOHS), comes from a family of six with four siblings. His father works as a tricycle driver, while his mother is a vendor.

This amazing story was picked up by the mainstream news media and has created a buzz that continues to trend on social media.

At issue here is whether or not Martir’s claims were true.

An Adobo Chronicles investigation team found out that many, including the news media, were duped into believing in the authenticity of the story.

Proof of the pudding: One of the “acceptance letters” posted online by Martir was from UCONN. No, not from the University of Connecticut. University of the Conned.

Vice President Sara Duterte Issues Executive Order Banning AI In The Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – As Officer-in-Charge of the Philippine government while President Bongbong Marcos is in the U.S. for his 5-day state visit, Vice President Sara Duterte has the power to issue executive orders, which she did.

Executive Order VP-1 was issued today by Duterte banning AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the Philippines.

The EO had a lot to do with her being the Secretary of Education.

AI and ChatGPT enable students and others to come up with computer-generated reports, homework, theses for submission to their teachers and professors.

Duterte is not happy about this. She says it deprives students of the opportunity to think for themselves and develop their skills. She says it also creates the atmosphere for plagiarism and non fact-based academic papers.

The EO takes effect immediately.

Senator Robin Padilla Proposes New K to 16 to Replace K to 12!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Philippine Congress seems bent on overhauling the country’s education system to make Filipinos more competitive in the international academic and professional arena.

Just days after Representative and former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo proposed a new K+10 +2, Senator Robin Padilla filed his own bill in the Upper Chamber.

Padilla’s bill proposes to replace the existing K to 12, with K to 16. He says there is nothing new about his proposal. It just makes clearer the number of years Filipinos spend in school from their Kindergarten years till graduation from the university.

K to 16 is inclusive of Kindergarten, 6 years in elementary, 4 years in junior high, 2 years in senior high and 4 years in college. Padilla said the K to 12 program has been discriminatory of college students because it left them out of the equation.
