MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Sen. Francis (Kiko) Pangilinan on Wednesday filed Philippine Senate Resolution 271, which seeks to conduct inquiries into social media platforms that allow the spread of fake news.

Pangilinan filed PSR 271 to hold hearings on the rise of fake news and misinformation on social media platforms, especially on Facebook, and penalize them for failing “to provide an environment that enables the balanced flow of information into, out of, and across the country.”

The senator wants penalties that “will have to ‘hurt’ the giant social media company” for it to act on the sudden increase of fake news on the internet. Such penalties, he said,  will include a fist fight with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Pangilinan’s fist fight challenge was inspired by the recent incident on the Senate floor in which his colleagues Senators Antonio Trillanes and Miguel Subiri almost engaged in a fistfight to settle an argument.

Pangilinan told The Adobo Chronicles that he is also considering asking Zubiri if he’d be willing to engage Zuckerberg in an Arnis (Filipino martial arts) fight. Zubiri is an Arnis world champion. A boxing match between Zuckerberg and Senator Manny Pacquiao is also being considered, Pangilinan added.

As of press time, Zuckerberg had not responded to the challenge.

Trillanes Names ‘Trolls’ He Wants Investigated Under His Senate Bill

img_8541MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) –  Senator Antonio Trillanes IV wants a Senate investigation into the proliferation of “trolls” and fake news on social media.

Trillanes filed Senate Resolution No. 259, urging the committee on public information and mass media to probe the “proliferation of false, erroneous, distorted, fabricated and/or misleading news and information on social media, as well as on the so-called social media trolls.”

Trillanes described a troll as someone whose identity is typically unknown. A troll, he said, “deliberately creates and/or foments discord and conflict on social media sites” through the posting of controversial and inflammatory messages that provoke emotional responses from other internet users.

When pressed by The Adobo Chronicles to name the ‘trolls’ he wants investigated, Trillanes revealed his list which includes:

Philippine President Duterte Will Take A Back Seat At Miss Universe Pageant In Manila

IMG_8531.PNGMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to attend the finals of the Miss Universe Pageant to be held at Manila’s Mall of Asia Arena on January 29 (January 30 Philippine time).  He will be taking a back seat. Literally.

Duterte spokesperson Martin Andanar told The Adobo Chronicles that Duterte will be seated at the very back row of the 20,000-seat capacity auditorium, specifically in Section 316, upper level.

Further, Andanar said that in keeping with his promise that not a single centavo of government money will be used to fund the pageant, the president is paying for his own general admission ticket which costs P8,000 (approximately $160).  VIP tickets cost about P50,000 ($1,000).

It is not unusual for Duterte to take a back seat. He is known to take rear economy seats on commercial flights to and from his hometown of Davao City.
