USDA Reclassifies Wine As Fruit, Coffee And Chocolate As Vegetables

imageWASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – If you consume wine and coffee or eat chocolates on a regular basis, you no longer need to feel guilty about it.

In a stunning announcement today, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has reclassified wine as fruit and coffee and chocolate as vegetables. This means that it will now be much easier for Americans to follow the government’s nutritional guide, MyPlate, released in June, 2011.

MyPlate is the current nutrition guide published by the USDA — a pie chart depicting a place setting with a plate and glass divided into five food groups. It replaced the USDA’s MyPyramid guide, ending 19 years of USDA food pyramid diagrams.

MyPlate is divided into sections of approximately 30 percent grains, 40 percent vegetables, 10 percent fruits and 20 percent protein, accompanied by a smaller circle representing dairy, such as a glass of milk or a yogurt cup.

MyPlate is supplemented with additional recommendations, such as “Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.”

USDA says that it just makes sense to classify wine as fruit since it comes from grapes, and to consider both coffee and chocolate as vegetables because they come from plants.

For many years now, consumers have been barraged with studies and news articles about the health benefits of wine, coffee and chocolate. The USDA announcement should not come as a surprise.

Here’s to a healthier, fun diet!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – When Filipino voters go to their polling places on May 9, 2016 to elect, among others, a new president and vice president, they will find two unfamiliar names on the official ballot.

The new names are Daang Matuwid for president and Daang Matuwid for vice president, both running under the administration’s Liberal Party.  It is unclear whether the candidates are brother and sister, or husband and wife, in which case, is in violation of the Philippine Constitution’s provision on nepotism and conflict of interest.

Many Filipinos are also questioning the qualifications of the two candidates.  The Constitution provides that candidates for president and vice president must be natural-born Filipinos. Voters are demanding to see the birth certificates of the Daang Matuwids.

A call by The Adobo Chronicles to Commission on Elections Chairman Andres  D. Bautista has not been returned as of press time.

Stay tuned for more on this highly controversial, developing story.

Manny Pacquiao Ends Senatorial Bid With A Decisive Win Over Timothy Bradley

imageLAS VEGAS, Nevada (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao ended his legendary political career with a decisive win over American Timothy Bradley in their third encounter in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 9 (Sunday, April 10 in Manila). Pacquiao won by a unanimous decision.

The 37-year-old Pacquiao, a congressman in the Philippines who is running for a senatorial seat in his country’s May elections, announced he was quitting the Senate race.

Like most people who decide to voluntarily retire from their chosen careers, Pacquiao said he wanted to quit on a high note, and quit as a winner. He didn’t want a loss in the elections to taint his victorious final bout in the ring.

We can’t blame him. It’s good for him. It’s great for the Filipino people.
