‘Nina,’ Starring Zoe Saldana: The First Contender For The 2017 Oscars

imageHOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – Now that the 2016 Oscars have been handed out, it’s time for film makers and moviegoers to look to next year’s contenders. Critics are already saying that ‘Nina,’ a biopic about the legendary troubled singer Nina Simone, is leading the pack.

The new film stars actress Zoe Saldana and David Oyelowo (‘Selma,’ ‘The Brave One’).

Saldana, a Latina, brings to life the blues legend who was a major figure during the civil rights movement.

There was one problem when Saldana was cast. She wasn’t  black enough. But make-up artists worked hard to make her light skin several shades darker. They even gave her a prosthetic nose.

And so, the rest is history. ‘Nina’ is all but assured of a nomination, perhaps even an  Oscar statuette for ‘Best Make-up’ come the 2017 Academy Awards.

Is this the beginning of the end of #oscarssowhite?

“Nina,”  hits theaters and VOD on April 22.

NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – Gossip tabloids and social media are going crazy over news that Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach from the Philippines is dating Mikhail Varshavski, the “Sexiest Doctor Alive.”

Twenty-six-year-old Varshavski is a New Jersey-based doctor who was awarded People Magazine’s coveted title last fall.

Wurtzbach has posted a photo of herself with Varshavski in what appeared to be a gym date.

Upon hearing the news, Philippine President NoyNoy Aquino and his sister, actress and TV host Kris, were reportedly very upset and devastated.

The president was rumored to have dated Wurtzbach before she became Miss Universe, and Kris had publicly stated that she would be happy to be Wurtzbach’s sister-in-law.

Truth hurts, but it’s time for both Aquinos  to move on.

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Secretary Dinky Soliman of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has a love-hate relationship with Manila’s homeless population and street children. She is known to have rounded up street families and hauled them to resorts outside Manila during the visit of Pope Francis as well as during the APEC summit.

Soliman now wants to make it up to these families.

National government officials — from the president to the members of the Supreme Court to Cabinet secretaries all have their summer houses and cottages in Baguio City.  Most of them spend their Holy Week vacation in Baguio, as a way to unwind and escape Manila’s summer heat.

Well, this year, Soliman is making the ultimate sacrifice.  She is offering her Baguio cottage to  a dozen homeless families for an all-expense paid vacation to Baguio from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.

Most Filipino Catholics give up eating meat during the season of Lent. Soliman chose to give up her Baguio cottage.
