FORGET APPLE WATCH, HERE COMES VOLKSWAGEN CLOCK!

The Volkswagen Clock
The Volkswagen Clock

WOLFSBURG, Germany (The Adobo Chronicles) – Apple faces some serious competition for its new product, the Apple Watch, and it’s coming from an automaker, Volkswagen.

Volkswagen, the world’s largest automaker, is in deep trouble over its rigging of diesel engine emissions tests in America and Europe.

The company falsified U.S. pollution tests by installing software (“defeat devices”) to make them appear cleaner than they were. Once on the road, the cars would pump out as much as 40 times the allowed level of nitrogen oxides. The German government said the company cheated in Europe too.

In an effort to rebuild its reputation and to entice its loyal customers to stick it out with the company, Volkswagen officials have come up with a special promotion for all Volkswagen owners, regardless of whether or not their vehicles are diesel-fueled.

The promotion, available at Volkswagen dealers worldwide, involves the sale of new tires in which customers will pay for three tires and get the fourth one for free.

The fourth tire comes equipped with a clock which can be positioned in the front or rear of the vehicle.  The clock does not need a battery to function. It gets its power from the tire rotation, much like a windmill generating electricity.

In order to avail of the promotion, Volkswagen owners in the U.S. are advised to contact their local dealers or to call a toll-free number, 1 800 VLKSCLK.

FLYING DOMESTIC? YOU WILL NEED A U.S. PASSPORT, THANKS TO GEORGE W. BUSH

EPassportsNEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles) – Flying from New York to San Francisco? Louisiana to Los Angeles? Minnesota to Florida? New Hampshire to Colorado? Well, you’d better have a valid U.S. passport.

Sure, these are domestic flights, but thanks to a law signed by President George W. Bush in 2005, following 9/11, issuance of state IDs and driver’s licenses has become more strict and cumbersome.

The REAL ID Act forces all U.S. states and territories to demand more proof of identity when issuing IDs, such as a verified original copy of a person’s birth certificate. Plus, it also increases the technology present in the government-issued cards.

Four states —  New York, Louisiana, Minnesota and New Hampshire — have refused to comply with the new law which means that if those four states don’t upgrade their ID systems, the Transportation Security Administration or TSA will demand that residents use passports rather than driver’s licenses to board domestic flights beginning in 2016.

The TSA will accept U.S. passport cards which cost $55, or passport books costing $135 as valid ID.

On the positive side, this will mean more revenue for the State Department which issues U.S. passports and passport cards.  Foreign embassies and consulates in the U.S. will also see increased revenue for non-U.S. citizens who will need to secure passports from their respective countries of origin.
