WHY POPE FRANCIS CHANGED PLAN TO ENTER THE U.S. VIA MEXICO

article-2561514-1B94DF3500000578-424_634x472THE VATICAN, Italy (The Adobo Chronicles®) – Pope Francis is back in The Vatican after his successful visit to Cuba and the United States.

Unknown to many, the Pontiff had originally wanted to enter the United States from Mexico, crossing the U.S. Border between Tijuana and San Diego via a rented Fiat.  It was a gesture that Francis wanted to undertake as a way of shining the spotlight on the issue of immigration.

Unfortunately, the plan did not materialize because of some passport and visa problems.

The pope has a Vatican passport which allows him to travel anywhere in the world as a head of state.  But he also recently renewed his Argentine passport and national identity card.

Because entering the U.S. via Mexico was not part of his official itinerary, the Pope could not use his Vatican passport.  He had to use his Argentine passport and needed  an entry visa for the U.S.

Argentina is not among the countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) of the United States.  The VWP exempts citizens and passport holders of the participating countries from visitor visa requirements.

Because the Pope’s decision to enter the U.S. through Mexico was last-minute, he didn’t have enough time to apply and secure a U.S. visa using his Argentine passport.

The immigration system of the United States is so broken that even the Holy Father is not immune from the strict and sometimes ridiculous visa requirements to visit the land of opportunity.

NEW POLL SHOWS A STATISTICAL FOUR-WAY TIE AMONG CANDIDATES FOR PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT

The 'presidentiables' : Roxas, Poe, Binay and Duterte
The ‘presidentiables’ : Roxas, Poe, Binay and Duterte

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles®) – It is unprecedented in the history of the Philippines, and perhaps even in the world: a population and electorate divided equally four ways.

We are referring to a new national poll soon to be released by the Social Weather Systems (SWS), the Philippines’ leading pollster and research firm.

In a survey of likely Filipino voters in the upcoming 2016 presidential elections, the leading candidates each garnered an approval rating of 25% of all respondents, with no room for a margin of error.

four-way

Of the four candidates included in the poll, three — Senator Grace Poe, Vice President Jojo Binay and former Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas —  have officially declared their candidacy for president, while one, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, is yet to declare (although he has repeatedly denied that he intends to run).

However, in a separate scenario where only the three declared candidates will vie for the presidency, each received  33%, with 1% of respondents still undecided.

In either scenario, it is a statistical tie, paving the way for the most interesting and hotly-contested Philippine presidential elections ever.

In order to confirm the SWS poll, The Adobo Chronicles is conducting its independent survey among our readers.  Please participate below:

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – Twenty-seven candidates of Miss World Philippines 2015 were presented to members of the press at the Solaire Resort and Casino in Pasay City on Tuesday.

The winner of this year’s pageant will  represent the country in the Miss World 2015 pageant to be held in Sanya, China.

Already, four contestants have emerged as early favorites to win the crown: Ma. Vanessa Wright, Jessica Rose Mc Ewen, Mia Allyson Howell and Janette Roanne Strum.

Notice that their surnames all suggest some mixed ethnicity.

Apparently, contestants gain extra points by having foreign-sounding surnames.  After all, last year’s title holder was Valerie Weigmann who was preceded, of course, by the very first Filipina Miss World, Megan Young.

“This batch, they’re ready for the competition,” said Cory Quirino, national director of Miss World Philippines. “This batch is a representative of the Filipina from north to south, literally.”

And might we add, the “four corners of the globe!”
