SILICON VALLEY, California (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – It is the greatest nightmare for any parent: to lose a child in a crowded amusement park or, heaven forbid, to a kidnapper.
Suggestions to implant microchips in children, like they do for pets, have been met with great resistance and moral objections. For now, parents can be at ease knowing that the Amber Alert system is in place nationwide. The Amber Alert instantly sends electronic text messages to highway marquees, smart phones and the media whenever there is a report of a child who has been abducted or is missing.
But finally, a start-up Silicon Valley firm has announced that a new smart phone technology to track missing children will soon hit the market.
It is called a “Where’s my Baby?” It improves on Apple’s app called “Where’s my iPhone?” and operates on the same principle of letting you use your mobile phone or other smart device to find your missing child.
The new technology comes in a pair: a smart phone (or an app sold independently) that, with the push of a button, will send a signal to the location where your missing child is; and a toy wrist watch worn by the child that will set off an alarm and display the child’s location on your smart phone.
The two devices connect wirelessly through bluetooth technology.
Parents and child advocates are applauding this new technology and are calling it the most fool-proof device ever invented to locate missing children.
Well, fool-proof for as a long as parents don’t lose their smart phones.
It is estimated that about 4.5 Million smart phones are lost or stolen each year in the United States. On the other hand, some 800,000 cases of missing children are reported yearly.
