NEW SMART PHONE TECHNOLOGY WILL HELP YOU FIND YOUR MISSING CHILD

imageSILICON VALLEY, California (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – It is the greatest nightmare for any parent: to lose a child in a crowded amusement park or, heaven forbid, to a kidnapper.

Suggestions  to implant microchips in children, like they do for pets, have been met with great resistance and moral objections. For now, parents can be at ease knowing that the Amber Alert system is in place nationwide. The Amber Alert instantly sends electronic text messages to highway marquees, smart phones and the media whenever there is a report of a child who has been abducted or is missing.

But finally, a start-up Silicon Valley  firm has announced that a new smart phone technology to track missing children will soon hit the market.

It is called a  “Where’s my Baby?” It improves on Apple’s app called “Where’s my iPhone?” and operates on the same principle of letting you use your mobile phone or other smart device to find your missing child.

The new technology comes in a pair: a smart phone (or an app sold independently) that, with the push of a button, will send a signal to the location where your missing child is;  and a toy wrist watch worn by the child that will set off an alarm and display the child’s location on your smart phone.

The two devices connect wirelessly through bluetooth technology.

Parents and child advocates are applauding this new technology and are calling it the most fool-proof device ever invented to locate missing children.

Well, fool-proof for as a long as parents don’t lose their smart phones.

It is estimated that about 4.5 Million smart phones are lost or stolen each year in the United States. On the other hand, some 800,000 cases of missing children are reported yearly.

AMONG ALL ASIAN COUNTRIES, PHILIPPINES RANKS SECOND IN INTERNET SPEED

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – President NoyNoy Aquino calls the Philippines the new ‘Darling of Asia,’ and he has the beef to prove it: infrastructure growth, foreign investments, dollar remittances from overseas Filipino workers and expatriates, and cheap labor.

Now, the country has earned another distinction in terms of technology.

The Philippines has just officially ranked second among all countries in Asia in as far as Internet speed is concerned. Second from the bottom, that is, next only to Afghanistan.

Furthermore, Internet service in the Philippines is the most expensive and ranks among the highest in the world, and Aquino could not be any prouder.

YAWNS AND GIGGLES AS GOVERNMENT ROLLS OUT FREE WI-FI ACCESS IN THE PHILIPPINES

wifi-philippines_1The Philippines’ Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is planning to roll out its free public Wi-Fi internet access project across the country beginning July of this year.

The One Billion-peso “Free Wi-Fi Internet Access in Public Places” project aims to provide free Wi-Fi Internet access in select public spaces in the country including parks and plazas, airports and seaports, public schools and hospitals, train stations and government offices.

Once fully deployed, the Project will serve 105,000 concurrent users with an average speed of 256 kbps (kilobytes) each. (Remember, the Philippines has a population of 100 Million.)

The DOST announcement was met with yawns and giggles by the Internet-savvy Filipinos, and here’s why:

256 kbps is equivalent to 2.048 Mbps (Megabits)

To put it in perspective, let’s take a look at the wi-fi speed in South Korea:

Capture

That’s 47.73 Mbps download and 48.99 Mbps upload speed in South Korea vs. 2.048 Mbps in the Philippines! And it is estimated that almost half of South Korea’s 50 Million population have access to high-speed Internet.

Any questions? Log on to the website of the DOST. That is, if you are able to get a connection, or have time for a little nap while waiting for your connection.

Perhaps, instead of building more high-rise condos and shopping malls, the Philippines should build a better Internet infrastructure. After all, isn’t the Philippines supposed to be the “New Asian Tiger?”

Or is it still the “Sick Man of Asia”  when it comes to Technology?
