POPE FRANCIS ARRIVES IN THE PHILIPPINES : POPE MANIA IN MANILA

Giant billboards welcoming Pope Francis in Manila

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – No rock star can ever compete with the popularity of the Pope in the Philippines, a country where more than two thirds of the 100 Million population are Catholic. Especially Pope Francis.

The streets of Metro Manila, the pontiff’s first leg in his four-day itinerary, are lined with giant billboards, tarpaulin signs, banners and posters with messages of welcome for Francis. It’s Pope Mania in Manila!

Some billboards became the headlines in recent days and were criticized for ‘commercializing’ the papal visit. Especially the Pepsi billboards (see photo).

The pope arrived at Villamor Airbase Friday and his motorcade wound through crowded thoroughfares enroute to Malacañang Palace for a meeting with President NoyNoy Aquino and a select group of Filipino politicians and members of the diplomatic corps.

Shouts and cries of ‘Viva il Pepsi,’ Viva il Pepsi!’ were heard from thousands of Filipinos lining the streets of the metropolis.

SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – When one criticizes or makes fun of North Korea or its leader Kim Jong-un, there are severe consequences.

We all know about the infamous hacking of Sony Pictures’ email account which many believe to be the work of North Korea in retaliation for the film, ‘The Interview’ whose plot revolves around the assassination of Kim.

Well, everyone who saw last night’s Golden Globes  knows that North Korea was once again the object of ridicule. Thanks to the award show’s segments that featured Korean American comedian Margaret Cho posing as a North Korean general obsessed with American entertainment, complete with the all too familiar Korean military attire, powdered face and distinctive accent.

The consequence? Cho’s Facebook and email accounts were hacked and North Korea once again is the suspect.

In the next few days, we expect compromising  and x-rated photos of Cho and damaging email conversations she has had with close friends to surface on the Internet.

Let’s just hope North Korea decides to skip the photos.

U.S. TO EXTRADITE COMEDIAN MARGARET CHO TO NORTH KOREA

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Upon the request of President Kim Jong-un, the United States will extradite Korean-American Margaret Cho to Pyongyang to face slander charges.

The State Department action comes the morning after controversial televised segments of the Golden Globes in Los Angeles.

As part of a running gag on the show, co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler introduced the “newest HFPA member” — North Korean general Cho Young Ja, played by Margaret Cho.

She was solemn and quiet at first, holding up her freelance magazine, Movies Wow, and wanting only to take a picture with Meryl Streep. Cho kept reappearing during the three-hour telecast as the North Korean general who is obsessed with American entertainment.

In a statement, the State Department said that the extradition is part of Washington’s ongoing efforts to re-establish diplomatic relations with North Korea. “It’s a good faith effort to show the Pyongyang government that America is sincere in wanting conciliation with the communist country,” the statement said.

The U.S. does not have an extradition agreement with North Korea.
