HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – For the first time in the history of the Golden Globes, not one, but two LGBT films have been nominated for the top acting awards: ‘Carol’ and “The Danish Girl.’
Last year’s best actor for both the Golden Globes and the Oscars, Eddie Redmayne, is again nominated in the drama category for his role in ‘The Danish Girl.’ Cate Blanchett and Mara Rooney are both nominated as best actresses in drama for ‘Carol.’
“The Danish Girl’ is about the remarkable love story inspired by the lives of artists Lili Elbe (Redmayne) and Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander). Lili and Gerda’s marriage and work evolve as they navigate Lili’s groundbreaking journey as a transgender pioneer.
In ‘Carol,’ Therese Belivet (Rooney) spots the beautiful, elegant Carol (Blanchett) perusing the doll displays in a 1950s Manhattan department store. The two women develop a fast bond that becomes a love with complicated consequences.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) today issued an apologetic statement saying that its voting members made a huge mistake by nominating Redmayne, Blanchett and Rooney in the wrong categories.
‘We erred in political correctness by nominating Redmayne as best actor instead of best actress for his role as a transitioning transgender woman. Further, we wanted to nominate either Blanchett or Rooney as best actor but we had no clue about gender roles in lesbian relationships so we named them both in the best actress category,’ the HFPA statement said.
But the LGBT community was more forgiving, with leaders and advocates saying they are very honored and ecstatic that the community will be front and center when the awards are handed out in Hollywood on January 10th.
All’s well that ends well!
