MOSCOW, Russia (The Adobo Chronicles, Moscow Bureau) – The 2018 FIFA World Cup was supposed to be held in Russia from June 14 to July 15, 2018, after the country won the bid to host the quadrennial international football tournament.
But President Vladimir Putin announced today that the Russian government is withdrawing from the hosting opportunity so that it could focus its resources on programs that would uplift the socio-economic conditions of its citizens.
Putin has strongly recommended that the Philippines host the 21st FIFA World Cup, something that he and President Rodrigo Duterte briefly discussed during the latter’s abbreviated state visit to Russia.
“I am very impressed at the ability of the Philippine government under Duterte to successfully host international events. Its hosting of this year’s Miss Universe Pageant is perfect proof,” Putin said.
Russia had also been host to the international pageant, but no host country in recent history has impressed the Miss Universe organization as the Philippines has. In fact, there are talks that the next Miss Universe Pageant will again be held in the Philippines.
If selected to host the 2018 FIFA, the games will be held at the Philippine Arena which holds the distinction as the world’s biggest indoor arena.
