NEXT SEASON OF “ASIA’S GOT TALENT” WILL BE OFF LIMITS TO FILIPINOS

imageSINGAPORE (The Adobo Chronicles) – A total of 14 countries were represented in the just-concluded first season of “Asia’s Got Talent,” now considered the largest such franchise of the reality talent competition which originated in Great Britain as a pilot broadcast.

Last night’s announcement of the grand winner — El Gamma Penumbra, a shadow performing group — made Filipinos extremely proud.  The winning act is from the Philippines, but so were three other acts that made it to  the grand finals.  The other Filipino grand finalists were classical singer Gerphil Flores, ten-year-old singer Gwyneth Dorodo, and hip-hop dance group Junior New System.

Completing the nine grand finalists were dancers Gao Lin and Liu Xin (China), musicians Khusugtun (Mongolia), dancers Triqstar (Japan), young rock stars The Talento (Thailand), and tap dancers Dance Thrilogy (Singapore).

But as Filipinos were celebrating the success of their contestants, the other 13 countries signed and sent a petition to Fremantle Media and Sony Pictures Television — the show’s producers — demanding that the next season of “Asia’s Got Talent” be made off limits to Filipino contestants.

The petitioners stated that their respective countries were put at a serious disadvantage in the competition because of the number of amazing acts that represented the Philippines in the first season.  “We just cannot compete with the Filipinos,” they added.

The petitioners concluded by threatening to pull out of the competition next year if the Philippines were not excluded.

In order to save the extremely popular show, the producers agreed to ban Filipino talents from competing, at least for the next season. The ban will be revisited in 2017.

‘THE VOICE’ WILL CHANGE ITS FORMAT STARTING NEXT SEASON

Sia

UNIVERSAL CITY, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – The television show, ‘The Voice’ operates on the concept that singers should be judged based on their singing and not on their looks.

The reality show has gained enormous popularity since it first aired in 2011, and has spread across the globe through local franchises, including the Philippines.

Today, the U.S. version of ‘The Voice’ had Sia as its featured guest singer.

Of course we know Sia as the voice behind many hits like ‘Chandelier’, but the Grammy-nominated artist is incredibly shy when it comes to showing her face at public events. Hence she appears with her face fully covered by her hair, just like she did on tonight’s show.

After her guest appearance, the producers of ‘The Voice’ had a light bulb moment.

Starting next season –if there is going to be one —  all contestants, from the blind audition all the way to the finals, will have to cover their faces with their hair or a veil.  This way, the show will remain true to its original concept that the best singers don’t necessarily have to be the most good-looking.

The Adobo Chronicles  fully supports this new format. And so does Reyna Elena, a Filipino American fan of the show.

We tried to reach Broadway star Lea Salonga, a judge in the Philippine version of the show, but were unsuccessful.  (Miss Salonga, if you happen to read this, please contact us).

AMERICAN IDOL UNDERGOING A MID-LIFE CRISIS

imageHollywood, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Auditions are now being held nationwide for Season 14 of American Idol  (AI)  but the reality show seems to be undergoing a mid-life crisis. Or shall we say ‘golden crisis?’

It all started when Steven Tyler became a judge on the singing competition.   Viewers considered him to be too old (read: senior citizen) to judge young contestants. Not that the other judges  weren’t close or already in their golden years.

Viewership & Contestants

In Season 1, the average age of American Idol viewers was 32. Today it’s 50 and beyond.

The only thing that has kept AI contestants within the teen and young adult demographic is the age cap of 28 years old.

But the sure sign of AI’s mid-life crisis is its newest sponsor: AARP.
