JOURNALISM: PHILIPPINE NEWSPAPER STARTS NEW TREND — HEADLINE-LESS FRONT PAGE

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – ‘Death Came Before Dawn,’ read the banner headline of a major daily newspaper, the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) last week. The story was about Filipina Mary Jane Veloso who was scheduled that day to be executed by the Indonesian government along with eight others convicted for drug-related crimes.

There was one big problem: Veloso’s execution was stayed at the 11th hour, and the newspaper received harsh criticism and major embarrassment for pre-empting Veloso’s death.

Fast forward to Monday, the morning after Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao lost by unanimous decision to American Floyd Mayweather in what was billed the ‘Fight of the Century.’

The PDI ran a full-page, view-from-behind photo showing Pacquiao acknowledging cheers from the crowd that witnessed the fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The same photograph showed Mayweather seemingly puzzled at the crowd’s reaction to his victory. The choice of photograph made it appear that Pacquiao won.

In an effort to save itself from yet another embarrassment, PDI skipped the headline. Instead, it  asked the readers to turn to Page  A17 in order to read the full story of Pacquiao’s disappointing loss to Mayweather.

Was it a wise move on the part of the respected newspaper?

Nah, we think PDI was in denial.  It had hoped to run a banner headline on its front page announcing: ‘Pacquiao Beats Mayweather!’

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – It is common knowledge that Canadian singer Justin Bieber is a solid Floyd Mayweather fan, always standing beside the boxer during the latter’s boxing fights, including Saturday’s bout with Manny Pacquiao.

But a TMZ video showing Bieber uttering the four-letter curse word when someone in the crowd screamed Pacquiao’s name might have been the final straw for the Filipinos.

The incident happened just hours before Saturday’s fight, as Bieber partied with a group of fans and supporters at his hotel in Las Vegas.

The Adobo Chronicles learned that Bieber has been permanently banned from visiting the Philippines, let alone holding a concert in Manila as part of the singer’s planned tour of Asian countries.

The Philippine ambassadors and consuls in the U.S. and Canada received a diplomatic memorandum from the Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs advising them to deny Bieber a tourist or any other non-immigrant visa to Pacquiao’s motherland.

Now Bieber knows that he can f*** Pacquiao but he cannot mess with the Filipinos.

TOP TEN REASONS THE PACQUIAO-MAYWEATHER FIGHT WAS THE SCAM OF THE CENTURY

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (The Adobo Chronicles) – It’s all hype, this ‘Fight of the Century’ billing for the Pacquiao-Mayweather match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Saturday night. It’s now the morning after, and people around the world are calling it the ‘Scam of the Century.’

Here are the top 10 reasons why:

  1. There were actually three, not two fighters: Pacquiao, Mayweather and Tecate. That’s why the national anthem of Mexico was also sung.
  2. It wasn’t a boxing match.  Rather,  it was hug and run.
  3. There were no swollen faces, cuts, bruises. And no blood. That’s a first.
  4. It’s all for show. Mayweather’s $25,000 mouthguard was studded in gold and diamonds.
  5. Pacquiao’s ‘Jesus’ t-shirt was sponsored by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.
  6. Justin Bieber looked even more like a fool next to Mayweather. So did late night show host Jimmy Kimmel marching into the ring behind Pacquiao.
  7. Paris Hilton was in the house.
  8. Pacquiao’s mom, Mommy D, was NOT in the house.
  9. Staff of The Adobo Chronicles paid $72 a piece, after taxes, for a front-row seat at Dave & Buster’s Sports Bar. We were’t even served Tecate beer, or San Miguel beer for that matter.
  10. It’s not about the money. Tell that to Pay-per-View, HBO, Showtime and MGM Grand. And oh, Pacquiao is now also called Money Pacquiao, and Mayweather, Much More Money Mayweather.
