BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to end corruption by abolishing Philippine Congress, and to increase the salaries of government employees, if he is elected president in 2016. Duterte is considered one of the strong contenders for president, although he has not  yet decided whether or not to run.

“If we will follow the presidential form of government, it will take us 40 to 50 years before we can achieve the needed reforms,” Duterte told guests during the Federalism Forum here last Thursday.

Reacting to Duterte’s statement, Vice President Jejomar Binay who is considered the frontrunner in the 2016 presidential race, countered by saying that if elected, he will abolish the Office of the President. Instead, Binay said he will establish a monarchy.

“I believe that the Royal form of government is the only answer to the country’s problems,” Binay said, adding that too much politics is the root of all corruption in the Philippines.

Binay said that a monarchy will also eliminate the need for future elections which are always tainted with fraud, since the head of the monarchy is always determined by ascendancy.

Imagine Malacañang, the presidential palace, occupied by Haring Jejomar (King Jejomar), Reyna Elenita (Queen Elenita), Prinsepe Junjun (Prince JunJun), Prinsesa Abigail (Princess Abigail) and Prinsesa Nancy (Princess Nancy).

So if you want a monarchy for the Philippines, vote for Binay in 2016!

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – President Barack Obama delivers his State of the Union Address (SOTU) before the U.S. Congress and the American people at 9pm Eastern time on Tuesday, January 20. He is expected to focus on middle-class economics.

Unlike in previous SOTU’s, this year’s will have a new feature – the red carpet ceremonies –  much like the Academy Awards (Oscars) red carpet.

The Republican-controlled Congress recently voted to hold the pre-speech fashion ceremonies, something that it copied from the Philippines’ State of the Nation Address (SONA).

All eyes will be focused on what Michelle Obama will be wearing. Or Michele Bachmann for that matter.

If you don’t have cable TV, you are out of luck. The SOTU red carpet ceremonies will be shown exclusively on CNN beginning at 7pm Eastern.  The CNN red carpet coverage will be hosted by CNN anchor Don Lemon and the late Joan Rivers’ daughter Melissa.

PHILIPPINE CONGRESS OFFICIALLY DECLARED “NO MAN’S LAND”

govManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – As the Philippines braced itself for Typhoon Ruby, the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) declared several areas of the capital as “no man’s land.”

As many as 10 districts (barangays)  and two major thoroughfares — Roxas and Espana Boulevards — were expected to experience severe storm surges and flooding. Declaring “no man’s land” means that people are forbidden to visit or stay in those areas for safety reasons.

The MDRRMO is tasked with notifying the public about potential danger and high-risk situations.

Last week, the MDRRMO declared both the Philippine Senate and House of Representatives as “no man’s land,” citing the fact that visiting the Congress buildings would pose a great danger to the taxpaying public.  An MDRRMO spokesperson said that crocodiles abound in both houses and that the public should stay away and refrain from being in contact with the legislators.

MDRRMO is reportedly also considering declaring the Malacanang (presidential palace) and the headquarters of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines as “no man’s land.”
