MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Philippines is making history with the launch of the first Miss Gay Manila in the nation’s capital.

Having a gay beauty pageant is far from being a first. What makes Miss Gay Manila 2015 one for the record is that the pageant is sponsored by no less than the government. Now that would make Miss Universe Pageant owner Donald Trump nervous and threatened.

At today’s press presentation of the candidates, Manila Mayor (and former Philippines president) Joseph Estrada was on hand to give a kiss to each aspiring beauty queen.

The grand coronation will be held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on May 20, 2015.

“The most energetic, witty, optimistic and confident candidate can get a chance to be crowned as the first ever winner of this prestigious pageant that promotes equality among all genders,” Estrada told reporters.

Estrada received a thunderous applause when he announced that the winner of this pageant will represent the City of Manila in the next Miss Philippines contest to choose the country’s representative to the 2016 Miss Universe Pageant.

Prizes at stake are P500,000 cash for the Grand Winner of Miss Gay Manila 2015, P200,000 for the First Runner-up and P100,000 for the Second Runner-up. The prize winnings will be exempted from local government taxes. However, they will be subject to national government tax by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), according to BIR Commissioner Kim Henares.

CONTEST ORGANIZER GRAPPLES TO RESOLVE HUGE ERROR IN MISS PHILIPPINES PAGEANT

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The year: 2010. The winner of the Miss Philippines Intercontinental is … Christi Lynn Landrito McGarry!

Fast forward to 2015. The winner of Miss Philippines Intercontinental is … Christi Lynn Landrito McGarry!

Huh?

That’s right, last Sunday night, McGarry was named the Philippines’ representative to the 2015 Miss Intercontinental Beauty Pageant.

Apparently, in naming the winners of the various Miss Philippines titles, the judges forgot that McGarry had already represented the Philippines once in that same pageant.  Pageant rules, of course, do not permit repeat candidates.

So, Binibining Pilipinas Charities (BPC), franchise holder of the Miss Philippines pageant is in quandary on how to resolve the huge error. BPC chairwoman Stella Marquez Araneta said that she may have to switch around some of the titles awarded Sunday night.

Will McGarry switch titles with Miss Philippines Universe Pia Wurtzbach? No way! Wurtzbach has joined the Miss Philippines pageant three times before winning the title this year.  She’s not about to give up the most prestigious of the Miss Philippines titles.

Will McGarry switch titles with Miss Philippines International Janicel Lubina? Unlikely. Lubina’s morena (tanned) complexion and amazing housemaid-to-beauty queen story make her the perfect candidate for Miss International.

Will McGarry switch titles with Miss Philippines Supranational Rogelie Catacutan? “I will sue BPC if that happens,” Catacutan said, “Miss Supranational is considered a bigger and more prestigious pageant than Miss Intercontinental.”

So what’s left is a possible switch with Miss Philippines Tourism Ann Lorriane Colis. Colis also seems unwilling to give up the crown she has won.

May we suggest that the issue be resolved the Pinoy way?

YET ANOTHER (NEW) PHILIPPINES BEAUTY PAGEANT: MISS MRT

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Philippines holds the distinction of being in an elite circle of nations that have won all of the major international beauty pageants — from Miss Universe to Miss International to Miss World.  And then some.

Beauty contests are a national preoccupation in the Philippines. Every Barangay (neighborhood political unit), town fiesta, school or university, government agency and private company in the country has its own beauty queen. Not to mention each Rotary Club, Lions Club, and Jaycees Club. Even the Catholic Church has its own queen, Reyna Elena, during the annual May cultural-religious festival pageant — the Santacruzan.

Last night, yet another beauty queen was crowned — Miss Aviation, 17-year-old Cleo Margaret Brown — whose first job is to represent the Aviation community at this week’s Hot Air Balloon Festival in what used to be the U.S. Clark Air Force Base north of Manila.

Today, Ramon Buenafe, the new general manager for the Metro Rail Transit (MRT), Metro Manila’s controversial and problem-plagued mass transport system, announced yet a new beauty pageant.

The search is on for Miss MRT whose primary responsibility is to flash a beautiful smile and wave to the hordes of MRT passengers who have to fall in (long) lines to get to the crowded trains, especially during heavy commute hours.

Buenafe hopes that his novel idea will help ease the anger and frustration coming from passengers who were slapped with a fare hike early this year despite escalating concerns of overcrowding and safety within the train system.
