Philippines’ Commission On Elections Will Not Stop Pacquiao Fight, Says It’s Powerless

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – One of the most powerful agencies of the Philippine government says it is “powerless.”

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has decided that it cannot enforce its own rules that assure equal media coverage for all candidates running for elective office.

COMELEC Chairman Andres Bautista announced the decision on a query posed by former Akbayan party-list representative Walden Bello and former senator Rene Saguisag on whether the  televised April 9 boxing match between senatorial candidate Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley, Jr. in Las Vegas would violate election laws. The duo complained that the international and local media coverage of the fight would give Pacquiao undue advantage over other senatorial candidates.

The Pacquiao-Bradley match will happen exactly a month before the 2016 Philippine elections.

Bautista said that it is not within its power to stop the telecast. He also added that the poll body cannot act on the issue because no one has filed a formal complaint, saying it cannot act on “hypotheticals.”

This COMELEC decision is yet another proof that under the Aquino administration,  government appointees are paid to do nothing, not even their mandated tasks as stated in their job descriptions.

Many will recall that during the height of the laglag bala scam, in which unsuspecting airline passengers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) were held and questioned for planted bullets in their luggage.  Manila International Airports Authority Chief Jose Angel Honrado told  Senator Bongbong Marcos during a Senate hearing that it was not within his jurisdiction to remedy the matter, saying his job was merely “coordination.”

Political observers suspect that the Aquino administration and the COMELEC are scared that if they stopped the live broadcast of the Pacquiao-Bradley fight, they will face the ire of Filipino boxing fans.

ORANI, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In the United States, the state of North Carolina faces backlash for a new  law that blocks local governments from enacting ordinances to allow transgender people to use public bathrooms that match their gender identities. In the Philippines, a transgender woman is running for elective office to install gender-neutral bathrooms in Congress.

A 49-year-old transgender woman is seeking Bataan province’s first congressional district seat, and could become the first openly LGBT  lawmaker. Geraldine Roman comes from a family of politicians, being the daughter of outgoing Bataan Representative Herminia Roman and the late Assemblyman Antonino Roman, Jr.

Roman champions gender equality and has promised to revive an antidiscrimination bill. She recently verbalized her campaign platform, saying,  “My problem upon reaching Congress is which comfort room (bathroom) I am allowed to use.”

So, is the Philippines ready for a transgender congresswoman, and is congress ready for gender-neutral bathrooms?

We will find out on May 9, the date of the country’s 2016 elections.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) –  Many Filipinos are not happy about the controversial Mar Roxas campaign comic book.  Mar Roxas is not happy with the illustrator of the comic book.

Airing his thoughts on his controversial creation, Pinoy artist Karl Comendador said he was merely doing his job when he illustrated the much-criticized Mar Roxas promotional comics.

On his Facebook page, Comendador said he had been doing illustrations of political figures way back and this one was no different. He also revealed he was in fact supporting the candidacy of Roxas’ rival, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

“Marami po akong naidrowing na komiks pampulitika noon at ngayon. Trabaho lang po, sana’y inyong maunawaan. Maraming salamat po. DUTERTE PO ANG PRESIDENTE KO!” he wrote. (I have drawn many political comics in the past and up to now.  It’s just work, I hope you understand. Thank you. Duterte is my president!)

Upon learning that the illustrator will be voting for Duterte, the Roxas campaign instructed its staff to cut Comendador’s professional fee in half.
