OBAMA APPOINTS JEREMY LIN AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO CHINA

volvolinWashington, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) –President Barack Obama has just announced the appointment of NBA player Jeremy Shu-hou Lin as new ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.  If confirmed by the Senate, the basketball star will replace current Ambassador Max Sieben Baucus who is stepping down after just seven months in his position.  Baucus is quitting because he says he is extremely homesick and wants to go back to his home in Montana.

Lin, who currently plays with the Los Angeles Lakers, became an international sensation in 2012 when he unexpectedly led a winning streak by the New York Knicks in that year’s NBA season.  This started the “Linsanity” craze in the U.S. and abroad.

In announcing the appointment, Obama said that there is no one who could better fill the shoes of Baucus than Lin.  “Although he was born in America, the Chinese people can very well identify with him because of his lineage,” Obama said.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that the president is well aware that the Chinese are very fond of basketball and hopes that Lin’s dribbling, guarding and shooting skills will further endear the Chinese to the United States of America.

There was earlier speculation that Obama was considering appointing Dennis Rodman, given the flamboyant basketball player’s demonstrated diplomatic skills in his meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.  However, Obama decided on Lin because he believes that the Chinese will take him more seriously than Rodman.

Lin, 26, will make history as the youngest U.S. Ambassador, eclipsing the previous record held by John Huntsman, Jr. who was appointed by President George H.W. Bush in 1992 as ambassador to Singapore.  Huntsman was 32.

LAWMAKERS WANT DEATH PENALTY RESTORED IN THE PHILIPPINES, ON ONE CONDITION

Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Philippine lawmakers headed by Senator Tito Sotto III are seeking to revive the death penalty, following an alarming increase of heinous crimes in the country.

Previously, Republic Act 7659 provided for the imposition of capital punishment for certain serious crimes like murder, treason, kidnapping and rape.  The death penalty was abolished in 2006 by Congress with the approval of then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

So, what made the lawmakers change their minds?

The lawmakers saw a video on ONN, reporting that the U.S. State of Ohio has instituted a new way of executing death row inmates, replacing the often controversial lethal injection.  Ohio now uses a high-tech, robotic beheader that is considered more humane, comfortable, smooth, hygienic and quick.

In his proposed bill,  Sotto said that the death penalty will be restored only on the condition that the Philippine government purchase several of the robotic beheaders from Ohio.

Here is the video report from ONN:

PHILIPPINES TO BAN HELMETS FOR MOTORCYCLE RIDERS

8_ridersManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – In the U.S., the Helmet Law means bike and motorcycle riders are required to wear helmets to prevent head injuries in accidents.  In the Philippines, it means riders must take them off!

House Bill No. 4438, or the Helmet Ban Bill, will allow local government units in the Philippines to ban the use of helmets in their respective jurisdictions.  Bill author Celso Lobregat, representative from the province of Zamboanga, said that his measure is intended to curb crimes perpetrated by criminals riding-in-tandem (two to a motorcycle).

There has been a recent spate of incidents in which helmeted motorcycle riders snatch bags and purses from pedestrians.

“It is an easy choice for us,” Lobregat said, “we’d rather protect the purses and bags of pedestrians than the lives of motorcycle riders.  If they happen not to be criminals and figure in injury or fatal accidents, then so be it.”

An investigative report by The Adobo Chronicles shows that Lobregat himself was involved in a motorcycle accident when he was a teenager.  He wasn’t wearing a helmet and suffered serious injurious to his skull and brain.

Could there be a connection between the lawmaker’s accident and his idiotic bill?
