500 FREE ONE-WAY TICKETS BEING OFFERED ON HAWAIIAN AIRLINES

imageHonolulu, Hawaii (The Adobo Chronicles) – It is rare that commercial airlines offer free tickets with no strings attached. But that is exactly what Hawaiian Airlines is offering – complimentary tickets to as many as 500 passengers. What’s the catch? The tickets are one-way — out of Hawaii.

The offer is part of a new initiative between the Honolulu government and private businesses in Waikiki’s tourism industry.

For several years now, Waikiki has seen a sharp increase in homeless people lining Kalakaua Avenue directly across from Waikiki Beach. Honolulu’s City Hall and Waikiki merchants have agreed that the sight of homeless people — many of whom are from states in the U.S. Mainland — is not good for tourism which is the top revenue-earning industry of Hawaii.

Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association (HLTA) is giving the Institute for Human Services (IHS) $100,000 this year in addition to the same amount next year. But that’s just to kick start the program. The funds will help pay for the tickets on Hawaiian Airlines.

“When the number one complaint from our visitors on why they will not be coming back to Hawaii is the homeless, you have an issue,” said George Szigeti, President and CEO of HLTA. “So when IHS came to us with a plan of action tailored to address the homeless situation in our Waikiki community, we were pleased and we immediately pledged our support,” Szigeti said.

It is estimated that currently, about 500 individuals  call the streets of Waikiki home. The city would need an additional $400,000 to complete the process of sending the homeless back to their home states. It hopes to raise that amount quickly from businesses in Waikiki.

To qualify for the complimentary tickets, homeless people must appear at City Hall for a mugshot and fingerprinting and sign a pledge never to return again to the Aloha State. If they prefer to fly first class, they have to personally shoulder the price difference.

Say ‘Aloha!’

MANILA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LOSES TOP SPOT: PRESIDENT AQUINO VERY DISAPPOINTED

imageManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Philippine President NoyNoy Aquino has expressed extreme disappoinment that Manila’s International Airport has lost its distinction as the worst airport in the world.

With the expanded operations of a third terminal, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is no longer the world’s worst airport, sliding to fourth spot after topping the list for the past three years, according to a survey conducted by “The Guide to Sleeping in Airports” on http://www.sleepinginairports.net.

Islamabad Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Pakistan has moved up to the top spot as the world’s worst airport, followed by Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport in Saudi Arabia and Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport in Nepal.

The survey was conducted between September 2013 and August 2014.

“It breaks my heart that the airport named in my father’s honor has lost its top world distinction,” Aquino said, adding that “my administration will do all it can to gain back the top spot.”

Aquino directed the Philippine Department of Tourism, the Manila Airport Authority, Bureau of Immigration and Bureau of Customs to work closer together and come up with a six-month strategic plan to put NAIA back to Number One.

PHILIPPINES’ QUEZON CITY GOES AFTER WORLD ZUMBA RECORD; SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IS NEXT

BautistaQuezon City, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – October marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of Quezon City, former capital of the Philippines and part of the larger Metro Manila.

The city government, under the leadership of former child actor Mayor Herbert Bautista, is going for the big guns as part of celebrating this milestone.

zumbapartyOn October 12, Quezon City is holding what it hopes to be the largest Zumba class in the world and has set its eyes on the Guinness World Record.

But Bautista is not stopping there.  He has announced that he wants his city to be the first in the Philippines and in all of Asia to recognize same-sex marriage.

None of the countries in Asia allow same-sex marriage and none would recognize such marriages performed elsewhere in the world where it is now legal.

Bautista however acknowledged that even if he succeeds in bringing same-sex marriage to Quezon City, he knows it would not be valid since cities cannot establish their own marriage laws. (In the U.S., same-sex marriage laws are established by individual states).

As an alternative, Bautista said plans to hold the largest invalid same-sex mass wedding in his city, and achieve another Guinness World Record. He will personally officiate the mass wedding which he hopes to organize and schedule on February 14, 2015.

“This will be my Valentine’s gift to the city, and to my millions of LGBT friends and colleagues,” he said.
