Ad Hominem: Manila Newspaper Apologizes To Senator De Lima After Threat Of Lawsuit

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – No one can mess with Philippine Senator Leila De Lima, especially with her vast knowledge of the Latin language.

Today, the Manila Standard  profusely apologized to the lady senator after that shocking headline it published on Wednesday.

“Witnesses Finger De Lima,” the headline read.

That headline angered De Lima who threatened the newspaper with a lawsuit for defaming her good character.

“I am suing for Ad hominem,” De Lima told The Adobo Chronicles.

Ad hominem, short for argumentum ad hominem, is a logical fallacy in which an argument is rebutted by attacking the character, motive, or other attribute of the person making the argument, or persons associated with the argument, rather than attacking the substance of the argument itself.

It will be recalled that Delima uttered several Latin phrases during her privilege speech in the Senate the day after she was ousted as chair of the committee on justice and human rights.

“Sorry na po,” the Manila Standard said,” nakalimutan po lamang naming idagdag yung “point” sa “finger-point.” (We’re sorry, we just forgot to add the word ‘point’ to ‘finger-point.”

Filipino Bishop Says Former President Aquino Should Have Fulfilled His Promise To Be Runover By A Train

Bishop Pabillo

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chroniclesd, Manila Bureau) –  Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo had harsh words for Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte regarding the latter’s recent statement asking for an extension of another six months for the government’s ongoing campaign against illegal drugs.

According to Pabillo, Duterte’s call for an extension basically amounted to an admission that his strategy against drugs was ineffective. He also said it was Duterte’s way of reneging on his vow to resign after six months if his campaign did not succeed. “In the campaign, he categorically said the drug problem would be solved in six months or he would step down. But he is not a man of one word. His words cannot be trusted and he gives a lot of excuses,” the Philippine Star quoted him as saying.

The Adobo Chronicles caught up with Pabillo on his way to presiding over a church service at the Manila Catherdral and we asked for his comment regarding a promise by former President NoyNoy Aquino that he and his Transportation Secretary will have themselves be run over by a train if the LRT (Light Rail Transit) Line 1 project from Baclaran to Bacoor will not be completed in two years. That deadline was in 2015.

We asked the bishop if Aquino should also have fulfilled his promise.

The bishop’s answer:

“I’m late for the service, but yes!”
