Huge EDSA Rally Planned On First Anniversary of Philippine ECQ!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – A non-partisan coalition of groups has announced that on March 17, it will hold a huge mass rally on EDSA (site of the historic gathering that led to the ouster of then President Ferdinand E. Marcos), to commemorate the first anniversary of the Philippines’ Enhanced Community Quarantine, or ECQ.

The ECQ was first imposed in all of Luzon island and subsequently across the country by President Rodrigo Duterte to mark the government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, Filipinos were banned from leaving their homes, going to malls and churches, and forbidden to travel. There were also many localized lockdowns and a host of restrictions and innovative health protocols that boggled people’s minds.

The national government’s Covid-19 policy-making body, the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) has surprisingly issued a blanket permit for Monday’s mass rally, provided that participants adhere to these rules:

  1. Wearing of face masks
  2. Wearing of face shields
  3. No texting or talking on cell phones
  4. No public display of affection (holding hands, kissing, hugging)
  5. No conversations or laughter
  6. Above all: strict observance of physical distancing. Health Secretary Francisco Duque will be in attendance at the rally with his tape measure to ensure adherence to the one-meter rule.

ADOBO CHRONICLES’ POLL: LENI ROBREDO, OR KRIS AQUINO FOR PRESIDENT?

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau)- It’s a toss up! There’s really not much choice among the Philippines’ Opposition party on who to field as its Presidential candidate in 2022.

The Adobo Chronicles is polling all the Dilawan on who their preference is to become the next Philippine President.

PROPOSED CHARTER CHANGE MAY DISQUALIFY LENI ROBREDO From Becoming PRESIDENT!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Congress has its hands full in proposing amendments to the 1987 Philippine Constitution, including a provision that a vote for the President will automatically be a vote for his or her Vice Presidential runningmate.

Another major proposed change is a significant revision of the qualifications to run for President.

Senate President Tito Sotto has put forward a proposed amendment that would add a “preferential” qualification for Filipinos wanting to run for President. Sotto’s amendment which critics say is self-serving, adds a new qualification that states, “Previous experience as a film/TV actor preferred.” Sotto is, of course, a film/TV personality.

Sotto’s proposal also adds another qualification that says a Presidential candidate “Must be proficient in the three R’s: reading, writing and ‘rithmetic,’ a move seen as a strategy to disqualify Vice President Leni Robredo from running for President in 2022.

A call by The Adobo Chronicles to the Office of the Vice President has remained unanswered as of press time.

(Many will recall Robredo’s previous math gaffe where she said 40 x 4 = 1,600.)
