MAYOR ED LEE DECLARES ‘DAY OF SILENCE’ IN SAN FRANCISCO

imageSan Francisco, California – Following the disappointing loss by the San Francisco 49ers to the Seattle Seahawks, Mayor Ed Lee signed an executive order declaring Tuesday, January 21 as a “Day of Silence” in San Francisco.

Lee said that this will give 49er fans the much-needed time to  process their team’s failure to earn a spot in this year’s Superbowl and to recuperate from all the shouting, cheering and screaming that marked Sunday’s NFC championship game.

All city and county offices will be closed on Tuesday, making it a four-day weekend for most San Franciscans.  Monday is also a holiday, being Martin Luther King Day.

San Francisco’s  City Hall which in the past week has been illuminated with the red and gold colors, will go completely dark starting at midnight Sunday until midnight Tuesday.

OPRAH WINFREY FORMS AMERICAN FILM ACADEMY

imageChicago, Illinois – When Oprah cries, everybody cries; when Oprah gets pissed, you better watch out.

The most influential woman in the world – not to mention one of the richest – was perturbed at the fact that the film she starred in, Lee Daniels’ The Butler was snubbed by both the Golden Globes and the Oscars. When the film was released earlier this year, critics thought that Winfrey’s performance as the wife of the White House butler played by Forest Whitaker, was a shoo-in for a Best Actress nomination.

Ms. Winfrey not only has her own magazine but her own television network as well (Oprah Winfrey Network or OWN).

Today, she announced that she is forming her own American Film Academy which will function just like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which puts up the annual Oscar Awards.

The new academy’s awards will be called the Oprahs.

As of press time, it wasn’t known how many of the current Oscar voting members will defect to Oprah’s new academy.

EDWARD SNOWDEN IS U.S. FLAG BEARER AT 2014 WINTER OLYMPICS

flagbearerSochi, Russia – The 2014 Winter Olympics is just weeks away, and this spectacle to be hosted by Russia is gaining all the publicity plus a lot of controversy. Among other things, there have been numerous attempts to organize a boycott of the Sochi Olympics because of laws enacted by the government of Vladimir Putin criminalizing the public display of homosexuality within Russia.  And just last month, the White House announced that  the  official U.S. delegation won’t include a member of President Barack Obama’s family or an active cabinet secretary, but it will include openly gay athletes  including Billie Jean King, the tennis legend; and figure skater Brian Boitano.

Today, in a statement that stunned the sports and political world circles, the U.S. National Olympic Committee (USNOC) said that it has chosen the U.S. flag bearer for the February 7 Opening Ceremonies. It will be none other than Edward Snowden, the American accused of espionage in connection with leaks of top-secret information from the National Security Agency. Snowden is now living in Moscow and has been granted political asylum by the Putin government – another stickler in the hot and cold diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Russia.

In justifying its selection, the Olympic Committee said that regardless of the charges against him, Snowden represents the true spirit of strength, courage and perseverance which are among the prime ideals of Olympic sports.  The Committee also admitted that using a controversial and recognizable figure like Snowden would generate a lot of buzz and would add to the popularity of the U.S. Olympic team. It is also part of the USNOC’s continuing strategy at cost savings. “Since Snowden is already in Russia,” we won’t have to pay for any travel expenses,” a USNOC spokesperson said.
