PRESIDENT AQUINO WANTS TO BE THE PHILIPPINES’ MARTIN LUTHER KING

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) –  May Panaginip Ako (‘I Have A Dream’)! With those words, Philippines’ President NoyNoy Aquino laid out in no uncertain terms what he believes will be his legacy after he leaves office in 2016. He wants to be honored and remembered as his country’s Martin Luther King.

His Dream? That because of his policies, reforms and peformance as president, the Philippines will eventually become a First World Country.

In a speech before elementary school children in Marikina, a suburb of Manila, Aquino trumpeted the country’s economic achievements under his watch and the decline in unemployment and hunger incidence among families.

Aquino also boasted of his administrations’ anti-corruption efforts and programs for education, health and poverty alleviation that contributed to the country’s progress.

“Napakasarap pong pangarapin nito lalo pa’t alam nating maaabot ito kung maipagpapatuloy lang natin ang pagsisikap, pag-aambagan at pagsisigurong maayos at matapat ang pamamahala sa ating bansa,” he added. (It is so sweet to dream about this, especially when we know we can reach this status if we continue to strive, unite,  and ensure good and honest  management of our country.)

Upon hearing the news of the president’s dream, millions of Filipinos belonging to the 25% who continue to live below the poverty level, took to the streets of Metro Manila and other cities and towns throughout the country, to celebrate their impending emancipation from their decades-long economic status.

Economists and policy makers also began to erect electronic billboard charts so that the country can watch in real time how the Philippines will rise to the top from its current world standing as 154th in Gross National Income (GNI),  119th in Gross National Product (GNP) and 81st in Poverty Level.

Giant screens will also be built next to the electronic billboards to broadcast live video cam feeds from the country’s jail cells showing the day-to-day life of government officials and others serving time for graft, corruption, plunder and other crimes.

Aquino also directed the Department of Tourism to launch a new campaign that will herald the rise of the Philippines from Third to First World. The president’s own image will be featured in the campaign, with the quote ‘I have A Dream’ translated into 100 languages.

It is More Fun in the Philippines. Indeed.

BREAKING: JUSTICE KENNEDY WILL RECUSE HIMSELF FROM SUPREME COURT VOTE ON GAY MARRIAGE

Justice Kennedy

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – Citing a major conflict of interest, Justice Anthony Kennedy said today that he will be recusing himself from further deliberations and the eventual vote by the Supreme Court as it prepares to issue a landmark decision on gay marriage in the United States.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on several cases brought before it to settle once and for all the issue of whether or not the ban on gay marriage is constitutional. Some 37 U.S. states already allow gay marriage.

Kennedy made the announcement after hearing the news that Ireland has become the first country in the world to allow gay marriage through the people’s vote.  The Irish referendum concluded with an overwhelming majority voting to legalize same-sex marriage in this Catholic European country.

Kennedy, a Catholic, is of Irish descent.  Given the overwhelming historic vote by his fellow Irish, he considers it a major conflict of interest for him.

So for any decision to strike or uphold the federal ban on gay marriage in the U.S., the Supreme Court justices must vote 5-3, considering Kennedy’s decision to abstain. A split decision (4-4) effectively upholds the ruling of the lower court, handing victory to four states defending their gay marriage ban before the high court: Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky.

VICE PRESIDENT BINAY PROMISES TO NAME NORA AUNOR NATIONAL ARTIST IF ACTRESS ENDORSED HIS CANDIDACY

L-R: Binay, Poe, Aunor
L-R: Binay, Poe, Aunor

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) –  With his waning popularity exacerbated by recent allegations of unexplained wealth, Vice President Jejomar Binay is turning to the country’s superstar, Miss Nora Aunor, for a much-needed boost to his quest for the presidency.

Binay remains the frontrunner in national polls on who should succeed President NoyNoy Aquino after the latter’s term expires in 2016.  However, in recent weeks, Senator Grace Poe has steadily climbed in the polls, inching closer to Binay. Too close for comfort.

Wanting to capitalize on the popularity of Aunor, Binay promised that if the multi-awarded acrtress endorsed his candidacy for president, he would name Aunor as a national artist during his first year as head of state. (Aquino had previously snubbed Aunor by refusing to name her as national artist despite strong recommendations by the national nominating committee.)

It is too late for Binay: Aunor has just endorsed Senator Poe as her choice for president in the 2016 elections.

Political analysts have said that with Aunor’s endorsement, Poe will likely overcome Binay’s lead in the polls as early as next week.

Some have even suggested that a Poe might consider choosing Aunor as her vice presidential running mate.
