Adobo Chronicles’ Exclusive Interview With Maria Ressa. In Tagalog

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Rappler CEO Maria Ressa has been making the rounds of the international news media circuit giving interviews left and right, but for the very first time, she agreed to sit down with The Adobo Chronicles for a one-on-one, no-holds-barred interview. In Tagalog.

Here’s a transcript of that interview:

AC: Bakit mo nasabing patay ang demokrasya sa Pilipinas?

Ressa: Well, it’s very obvious that…

AC: Tagalog po.

Ressa: Ay, sorry. Mula noong umupow si Dutertey bilang President,  wala nang Freedom of the Press. Ano ba sa Tagalog ang Freedom of the Press?

AC: Sa konteksto ng Rappler? “Kalayaan sa Tsismis.”

Ressa: Salamat. Yes, wala nang Kalayaan sa Tsismis.  In addition… ano ba sa Tagalog ang “weaponize?”

AC: Ginagawang sandata.

Ressa: Salamat. Ginagawang sandata ng government ang batas upang i-silence and Rappler.

AC: Paano mo  nasabi yan? Eh, hindi naman sinara ng pamahalaan ang Rappler, di ba?

Ressa: Uh-oh, pero kung anu-anong case ang fi-nile nila laban sa akin.

AC: Kagaya ng?

Ressa: Ano ba ang “tax evasion” sa Tagalog?

AC: Pag-iwas sa pagbayad ng buwis.

Ressa:  Iyon! And, ano ba sa Tagalog ang “violation of the Constitution?”

AC: Paglabag sa Saligang Batas.

Ressa: Eksaktamento! Tapos, meron pang cyber libel. Paano sabihin yon sa Tagalog?

AC: Sinungaling.

Ressa: Puwede ba, mag-meryenda na lang tayo?

AC: Careful… oh, sorry, ingat, baka kasuhan ka ni Leni Robredo.

Ressa: For what?

AC: Ano ba ang Tagalog ng “plagiarism?”

Maria Ressa’s Inconvenient ‘Truths’

SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – Rappler CEO Maria Ressa, recently convicted for cyber libel in the Philippines, is thought to be a wordsmith. She is often heard blurting out template lines like “the law is being weaponized” to curtail press freedom, or “a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth,” or her more recent (which was also used as title for a self-serving documentary about her) “Death by a thousand cuts.”

But is she?

Well, it doesn’t take a Facebook fact checker like Rappler or Vera Files to find out that many of her rhetoric are far from originals.

Her ‘thousand cuts’ have been titles of previous films and documentaries, and her ‘lies told a thousand times’ can be traced to Nazi Joseph Goebbels.

Who knows what else in her  treasure chest of one-liners have been lifted from previously-published literature or taken out of historical archives?

That’s the inconvenient truth about Time’s Person of the Year, and the vanguard of truth in journalism. Not to mention a “dealer in securities.”

ABS-CBN Refutes BIR Claim, Says 11,000 Employees Include Ghost Writers

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) –  ABS-CBN is refuting a letter sent to Solicitor General Jose Calida by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR)  that  the broadcast network has only 4,401 employees.

 ABS-CBN has consistently claimed that it has a total of 11,000 employees who will lose their jobs with the non-renewal of its franchise.

A spokesperson for the network told The Adobo Chronicles that while it is not denying the 4,401 number, he said that BIR Commissioner Caesar Dulay failed to include in his letter the remaining 6,599 ghost writers that it employs for its newscasts, teleseryes and other shows.

You see, even ghosts are entitled to get paid for work done.
