North Korea Bans Sarcasm, Philippine Senators Want To Outlaw Satire

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Free speech is under heavy attack in Asia.  North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has banned sarcasm while a group of Philippine senators wants to outlaw satire.

Kim has banned sarcasm because he fears people only agree with him ironically, according to reports. Government officials were apparently warned they will “not be forgiven” if they are heard being sarcastic. Mass meetings were organised across the country to spread the word about the new order.

Meanwhile in the Philippines, four senators have banded together to file a jont bill that would outlaw satire in the  country.  The senators — Tito Sotto III, Manny Pacquiao, Ria Hontiveros and Leila De Lima — said they’re tired of being the subject of ridicule and the butt of jokes from a growing number of news satire sites.

“Why can’t these sites just leave us alone to do our job,” the senators complained. “When we are attacked on social media for our brilliant ideas, these satire sites are practically attacking the millions of people who voted for us.”

Sotto, who in the past was accused of plagiarizing the late U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, urged his followers to boycott satire news sites, including The Adobo Chronicles, So, What’s News?, The Professional Heckler, Mosquito Press, Eritas Times, Pinoy Trending, The Sick Man of Asia,  The Philippine Trend, The Philippine Chronicle,  The Philippine Pride, Baskille, and XOLXOL.ph

In addition to the satire sites, Hontiveros also wants to ban pro-Duterte bloggers like Sass Rogando Sasot and Mocha Uson.

The bill is set to be filed in the Senate’s next session.

‘Today’ Show Co-Hosts Resign Over Matt Lauer’s Presidential Forum Gaffe

image.jpegNEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – Calling Matt Lauer an embarrassment to the NBC Network and journalism, the co-hosts of the ‘Today’ Show resigned en masse today. Lauer’s co-hosts Al Roker, Natalie Morales and Savannah Gunthrie did not show up on the set of the popular morning show on Thursday.

At issue was Lauer’s mishandling of the presidential forum on Wednesday.  He was accused  of unfairness, sloppiness and even sexism in moderating the event.

Granted 30 minutes with each candidate, who appeared back-to-back at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in Manhattan, Lauer devoted about a third of his time with Mrs. Clinton to questions about her use of a private email server, then seemed to rush through subsequent queries about weighty topics like domestic terror attacks.

In contrast. Mr. Trump stormed onstage in his familiar motor-mouth style, often talking over Lauer and declining to directly answer many of his questions.

Most egregiously, Mr. Lauer allowed Mr. Trump to repeat, unchallenged, the false claim that he had opposed the war in Iraq when he supported the invasion on record in 2002.

The Adobo Chronicles ran into Roker at his Manhattan gym and we asked him why he was boycotting their morning show.

“I don’t want to be identified with a biased co-host,” he said. “I am a true journalist and I don’t want that reputation to be tarnished.”

We asked Roker who he thought should have moderated the forum instead.

“Ann Curry,” he said with full confidence.

News Media Outlets Confirm: Philippine President Is A Cannibal

image.jpegVIENTIANE, Laos (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The international news media couldn’t be more happy with lots of juicy reports on statements made by Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte.

It was just a couple days ago when news headlines proclaimed that Duterte had called U.S. President Barack Obama “son of a whore.”  The news reports prompted Obama to cancel his scheduled meeting with Duterte in Laos.

Now, an even juicer news story about Duterte is grabbing headlines.  The Philippine president is a confirmed cannibal.

While attending the ASEAN Summit, Duterte has pledged to personally deal with a group of Islamist militants by publicly eating them alive.

“They will pay. When the time comes, I will eat you in front of people,” Duterte said while addressing an audience in Laos.

The statement comes in response to a bombing incident that took place last week at a crowded market in Duterte’s hometown of Davao City, killing 14 people and injuring scores of others. The government blamed Islamic State-linked militant group Abu Sayyaf for the blast.

Upon reading the news headlines, President Obama said he was glad he cancelled his meeting with Duterte.  “I could have been eaten alive,” he said.
