Omidyar Network’s Donation To Rappler’s Senior Managers Ends Up To Be IOUs

E17C13E0-883B-4E44-BAC0-7719F8AAFF2FMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Calm down. There is no need to stress out over the news that Omidyar Network, a foreign investor in the online news source Rappler, was donating its investment to Maria Ressa and her senior managers.

P78 Million is a lot of money, and it amounts to more than P5 Million each to the 14 Rappler senior managers.

But there is one problem.  The money is not there.  Rappler had already spent Omidyar’s P78 Million investment, and is in deep financial trouble.  It’s the reason it launched an online donation campaign to try to raise P5 Million.  As of latest update, Rappler had raised just about half of that amount.

Upon learning that its investment is totally gone, Omidyar instead issued IOUs to the Rappler managers but could not say when they will actually receive the payout.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Internal Revenue is closely watching the donation from Omidyar to make sure the foreign investment group pays the mandated 30% donor’s tax which basically cuts what the Rappler managers will receive by almost a third.

Pia Ranada Wants Her Share Of The Omidyar Network Donation To Rappler Managers

E17C13E0-883B-4E44-BAC0-7719F8AAFF2F.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Loyalty and integrity end where money begins.  This is what’s happening to the online news source, Rappler.

Rappler’s foreign investor Omidyar Network announced that it was donating its $1.5-million (around ₱78 million) investment to the media agency’s 14 Filipino managers, in a move to resolve foreign ownership issues.

“This completely eliminates the basis of the unwarranted SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) ruling,” Stephen King, Omidyar’s Head of Global Governance and Citizen Engagement, said in a statement Wednesday.

The investment will be split equally among senior managers Jennifer V. Chua, Marie Fel D. Dalafu, Stacy Lynne M. de Jesus, Lilibeth Socorro L. Frondoso, Glenda M. Gloria, Dominic Gabriel L. Go, Miriam Grace A. Go, Natashya Marianne L. Gutierrez, Maria Rosario F. Hofileña, Gemma B. Mendoza, Pauline Gel C. Occeñola, Libertad G. Pascual, Maria A. Ressa, and Anne Louise B. Yosuico.

No mention of Rappler’s high-profile reporter, Pia Ranada.  And she’s crying foul!

”While I am not a senior manager, it was my arrogrance and reporting skills that have made Rappler famous, so I deserve my share of the Omidyar donation” Ranada told The Adobo Chronicles.

So between the impropriety of individual managers receiving the donation from a foreign investor, and Ranada’s rap against Rappler, we can truly say that money is the root of all evil.

Rappler’s true colors have just been revealed!

Pia Ranada Charged With Illegal Possession Of Deadly Weapon

8A4CAA86-D049-4773-9740-99D7FDFF42FB.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Rappler’s Pia Ranada is supposed to report the news, but lately she has been IN the news.

It started when Ranada was barred from entering Malacañang Palace upon direct orders from President Duterte.

Then today, the reporter was formally charged with illegal possession of a deadly weapon.

The charge came after videos spread on social media showing Ranada following a Presidential Security Guard (PSG) around Malacañang grounds, harassing and intimidating the man with her unlicensed weapon — her smart phone.

In a statement, the PSG said that since the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has cancelled the media license of Rappler, Ranada’s smart phone is now considered illegal.

”Moreover, she used the weapon to threaten a presidential guard,” the statement added.
