Washington, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – By now, everone knows who Jose Antonio Vargas is, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who, years ago came out as an undocumented immigrant, or American as he would like to put it. He has since become a staunch advocate for immigration reform.

But there’s also Ruben Vives, the Los Angeles Times reporter who won a 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Prior to his Pulitzer, Vives, who was born in Guatemala, was an undocumented immigrant and, like Vargas, he didn’t  know about it until later.

Pulitizer Prize-winning and other journalists are at the receiving end of both the country’s broken immigration system and President Obama’s immigration reform.

Like Michelle Malkin, conservative columnist . Althought not a Pulitzer Prize winner, she is the author of a book that justifies the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.

Malkin, who like Vargas is from the Philippines, has been in the U.S. Illegally, or as we would like to put it — undocumentedly . Allegedly, she faked her marriage to a U.S. citizen in order to legalize her status . The arranged marriage was eventually discovered by then Attorney General Janet Reno (of the Elián González custody case fame in 2000).

Since then, Malkin has been living in the shadows (or as Filipinos call it, TNT, or Tago ng Tago – always hiding), writing her columns from an undisclosed location in the Pacific Northwest.

With Obama’s recent executive action on immigration, Malkin is among the estmated 5 Million undocumented immigrants who have been given relief from deportation. In fact, Malkin has just received her green card.

So now  she can come out of the shadows and openly attack Obama’s policies, including immigration reform.

All’s well that ends well.

PHILIPPINES: NEW WORD ADDED TO TAGALOG DICTIONARY

downloadManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Previously, The Adobo Chronicles reported that ‘selfitis’ was officially added as a new word in the Oxford Dictionaries of English.

Today, a new word was added to the Tagalog (Pilipino) Dictionary, thanks to a new government fund scam uncovered by the country’s Commission on Audit (COA).  The new word is Malampaya.

Origin

Malampaya is a $4.5 Billion project started in 2002 off Palawan Island in the Philippines.  Operated by Shell Philippines Exploration BV and Chevron Malampaya LLC, it involves the extraction of natural gas off the waters of Palawan.

The service contract provides for a production-sharing scheme in which the government gets 60 percent of earnings from the operation.

Part of the government’s share — 900 Million pesos — was allotted for the rehabilitation of farms in 97 towns devastated by powerful storms. Instead, COA alleged that the amount was siphoned off and channeled to questionable non-governmental organizations, mostly associated with businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles, the incarcerated alleged mastermind of another fund scandal, a 10 Billion-peso pork barrel scam which benefited many top government officials.

In the Tagalog language, there is a word — Manampalataya — which means “to have faith.”

The Commission on the Filipino Language thought it appropriate to add the new word Malampaya to the Tagalog Dictionary because of this recent fund scam.  It will mean the exact opposite of Manampalataya.

The new word entry was indeed added to mean “to lose faith.”

Filipino language experts immediately hailed the new word addition, saying that “with the unending government fund scams and scandals that have preyed on taxpayer money, we urgently needed a new word to express our loss of faith in the government.”

PHILIPPINES: MOVE OVER PORK BARREL, HERE COMES MISTRESSGATE

imageManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – There’s a new scandal brewing in the Philippines. It’s called Mistressgate (you know, like Watergate). The pork barrel scandal was so yesterday!

The scandal revolves around a dating service site on the Internet involving married people. It’s called Ashley Madison, described on its website as “the world’s leading married dating service for discreet encounters.”

Justice Secretary  Leila De Lima, with full backing from the Catholic Church in the Philippines, is considering blocking the site from the Internet in the Philippines, arguing that extra-marital affairs could lead to divorce.

Both extra-marital affairs and divorce are illegal in the country, and is against the Catholic Church’s teachings.

Enter Vice President Jenomar Binay, with the backing of an overwhelming number of male politicians, from senators and congressmen to governors and mayors. “We have to protect freedom of speech and the integrity of the Internet,” Binay said, as he and his fellow politicians vowed to block any move by the Justice Department to ban the married dating site.

Observers say that this is looming as the greatest political and religious comfrontation the Philippines has ever seen because it cuts right through the country’s pervasive yet hush-hush machismo culture.

Most of the politicians backing Binay are known to have mistresses, publicly or privately. Including Binay.
