DES MOINES, Iowa (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina on Thursday reiterated claims made by her rival Jeb Bush that Asian women oftentimes come to the U.S. for the purpose of having babies, which then provide them with the rewards of health care, education and ultimately in most cases, future citizenship.

During remarks to the press in Le Mars, Iowa, Fiorina, who has had some momentum in the polls since her well-received debate performance earlier this month, asserted that “there’s an industry that has been set up in L.A. where Chinese women come over on a tourist visa and have a baby. This abuse has been going on for a while. We need to stop it.”

Asked if she had a proposal to fix the problem, Fiorina said that if elected president, she will issue an executive order requiring all women tourists  — 13 years old and above– from China and other Asian countries to undergo a pregnancy test upon arrival at U.S. Airports.  “Those found to be pregnant will be sent back immediately to their home country,” she said.

Responding to a reporter question, Fiorina said her proposal will not cost the U.S. taxpayers a single penny. The cost of the home pregnancy test kit ($15.99) will be collected from each arriving woman passenger whether or not the test comes back positive.

Fiorina did not address the issue of women tourists who become pregnant while in the U.S.

THE VATICAN, Italy – (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – Pope Francis has rejected a request by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for a private audience when the leader of the Roman Catholic Church visits the United States September 22-27, 2015.

During his papal visit, Francis will meet with President and Mrs. Barack Obama, address a joint session of the U.S. Congress, speak before the United Nations General Assembly and attend a huge religious gathering in Philadelphia.

Trump has sent a letter to The Vatican requesting a short private audience with the Pope. The controversial candidate offered to fly the Pontiff to Las Vegas on his private jet for a meet and greet at the Trump Towers. “He wanted to seek the Pope’s advice on how to better reach out to America’s Catholic voters,” a Trump spokesperson said.image

In rejecting the request, Pope Francis said, “By the grace of God, I cannot agree to meet with someone who has denigraded migrants and hard-working people like the Mexicans. And Trump has the nerve to meet with me after his disparaging remarks about Latinos! Has he forgotten that I, too, am Latino? ”

Trump could not immediately be reached for comment.

OVERSEAS FILIPINO WORKERS DITCHING THE BALIKBAYAN BOX IN FAVOR OF SUITCASES TO AVOID CUSTOMS TAX

Suitcases in lieu of balikbayan boxes

NINOY AQUINO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – The Philippines’ Bureau of Customs (BOC) has come under very intense fire in recent weeks from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) because of its recent announcement that balikbayan boxes will be opened and inspected to determine whether any of  the items contained inside are subject to tax.

Balikbayan boxes are those corrugated cardboard boxes used by overseas Filipinos to ship gifts and household items for their families back home. Until recently, balikbayan boxes were free of inspection and customs tax.

In order to avoid inspection and customes duties, many OFWs have ditched the balikbayan box in favor of huge suitcases.  They would rather bring their gifts with them when they travel back to the Philippines than have them sent through shipping companies and vendors. This way, they would be physically present when their luggages are inspected by Customs upon their arrival in Manila.

The new modus operandi is causing huge problems for the airlines because the multiple checked suitcases are creating long lines at airport counters. Airlines are also concerned about  potential overloading of the aircraft.

It has also resulted in long lines at the arrival lounges at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and has prompted BOC to deploy more customs inspectors.

Well, BOC has brought this upon itself.
