San Francisco Declares All Gay Bars As Historical Sites

image.jpegSAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – Upon the recommendation of Supervisor Scott Wiener, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee today signed an executive order declaring all gay bars in the city to be “historical sites,” protecting them from demolition and conversion to condo units while freezing their rents to pre-1980 levels.

The unprecedented move was prompted by news that one of San Francisco’s oldest gay bars, The Stud, faces possible extinction.  Its building on Harrison Street has been sold, rent is expected to increase three-fold, and the club’s owner is retiring and moving back to Hawaii.

The 50-year-old bar is considered by many as San Francisco’s Stonewall where the U.S. gay movement is believed to have started.

“We need to preserve San Francisco’s reputation as the gayest city in America and we cannot afford any more closures of any of our gay bars,” Wiener told The Adobo Chronicles.  By recommending the executive order to Mayor Lee, Wiener says it belies accusations by his gay constituents that his is “pro-business.”

Wiener also said that he will also file a resolution before the Board of Supervisors authorizing the City and County of San Francisco to confiscate that “one gay bar/restaurant on Castro Street which was demolished, renovated but never opened. “The owner of that business also owns two other gay bars in the Castro.

“Perhaps the city can convert that vacant space into a government-run gay bar which could generate additional revenue to solve the homeless problem in San Francisco,” Wiener said.

Inn That Was Site Of Stonewall Riots To Stop Serving Alcohol, Thanks To President Obama

image.jpegNEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – President Barack Obama announced Friday he was designating the Stonewall Inn in New York City and surrounding areas as the country’s first national monument to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights.

“This week I’m designating the Stonewall National Monument as the newest addition to America’s national park system,” Obama said in a video released by the White House. “I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country — the richness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us, that we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one,” Obama said.

The White House said the monument would encompass Christopher Park, the Stonewall Inn and the surrounding streets and sidewalks that were the sites of the 1969 Stonewall uprising.

A police raid on Stonewall Inn made history in 1969 when patrons fought back.  The arrest of many Stonewall patrons that day prompted people to protest outside the bar for weeks, leading to the first march for gay and lesbian rights in July of 1969. Those protests are credited as the turning point for LGBT rights in the United States.

Following the Obama announcement, Stonewall Inn and Bar informed its patrons that it will stop serving alcohol immediately in deference to it being designated as a national monument.

National Parks Service rules prohibit the consumption of alcohol in designated national parks and monuments.

Non-alcoholic drinks will still be served, according to Stonewall Inn.

Kris Aquino To Seek Presidential Pardon For Election Law Violation

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Election lawyer Emil Marañon III, in a Thought Leader’s piece on Rappler, said presidential sister Kris Aquino broke the law when she rode a presidential chopper to go to the campaign sortie of administration standard bearer Mar Roxas in Cebu. Marañon cites Section 261 of the Omnibus Election Act that says “use of public facilities owned or controlled by the government for an election campaign” is prohibited.

Under the succeeding Section 264, violation of Section 261 (o) constitutes an election offense and is punishable “with imprisonment of not less than one year but not more than six years and shall not be subject to probation.” In addition, “the guilty party shall be sentenced to suffer disqualification to hold public office and deprivation of the right of suffrage.”

Conceding that jail time is inevitable for the election law violation, Kris has officially sought presidential pardon from her brother, NoyNoy Aquino.

Under the Philippine Constitution, pardoning felons is among the special powers granted to the president.

Do you think President Aquino will grant pardon to his sister? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
