Philippines Poised To Become 28th State Of E.U.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (The Adobo Chronicles, Berlin Bureau) – The Philippines may not become the 51st state of the United States but it could become the 28th state of the European Union (EU).

EU has taken a deep interest in the Philippines because of its strategic location in Asia Pacific, a region that the Union considers crucial to its global economic and other strategies.

EU is an economic and political union of 27 countries and operates a single, internal market which allows free movement of goods, capital, services and people between member states.  It used to have 28 member states before Great Britain withdrew from the alliance.

The latest intervening move of EU was to pass a resolution demanding the release from prison of Opposition Senator Leila De Lima, whom the Union believes could succeed President Rodrigo Duterte whose term ends in 2022.

Sources at EU told The Adobo Chronicles that De Lima is perceived to be an ally and, if elected the next President, could help facilitate the entry of the Philippines into the Union to replace Great Britain.

After Brexit, there’s Philentry.

Reno Liver Spread Files Quo Warranto Case Against FDA!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Reno liver spread has been a Filipino household favorite for over 50 years.  It was a default spread on pan de sal that school kids take for their recess.  It has also been the “secret” ingredient for some of the best Filipino dishes like adobo and kaldereta.

Now, the local Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned the public against selling, buying or consuming this biggest little can in the world for the reason that it has not been registered under this regulatory agency for food, drugs and supplements.

Today, the makers of Reno liver spread told The Adobo Chronicles that they are filing a quo warranto case against the FDA, claiming that their paté-like product has been grandfathered by default.

Reno liver spread has been enjoyed by Filipinos since 1958.  The FDA was founded only in 1966.

(Quo warranto is a special form of legal action used to resolve a dispute over whether a specific person has the legal right to hold the public office that he or she occupies.)

So the question is: Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

Congress Slashes OVP’s 2021 Budget To Zero!

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Quezon City) –Members of the House of Representatives wanted to provide the Office of the Vice President (OVP) a bigger budget as they lauded the programs implemented by Vice President Leni Robredo.

Robredo, who physically attended the budget briefing of the Committee on Appropriations on Monday, said her office sought a P723.39-million budget for 2021, but the Department of Budget and Management only approved P679.74 million.

But now, even that lower budget may end up being slashed to zero!

This development came about after several lawmakers uncovered a video of Robredo telling a U.S. crowd shortly after she assumed her position that the only power vested by the Philippine Constitution on the the Vice President “was to wait for something to happen to the President.”

“We can’t allocate taxpayer funds to someone who is simply waiting in the sidelines,” the lawmakers said.
