Filipino Representation In U.S. Capitol Siege!

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – Not since the likes of John Ensign, Bobby Scott and Steve Austria have Filipino Americans been represented in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. But all that changed yesterday during the siege on Capitol Hill staged by pro-Trump supporters.

Many Filipinos noted with pride their country’s representation in the insurrection, highlighted by a walis tambo (soft broom) that’s as essential a household cleaning item as the tabo (bathroom dipper/pitcher). The above photo of the protester inside the Capitol instantly went trending.

Indeed Filipinos have come of age in the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave!

New Facebook Online Tool Can Confirm Gender Identity!

SAN JOSE, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Jose Bureau) – Move over FaceApp. Make way for Facebook’s gender identity online tool!

Netizens have been amused by FaceApp’s newest tool that can transform photos of males into photos of females. That’s now passé.

In celebration of Pride Month this June, Facebook has launched a new tool that will confirm one’s gender identity, sexual preference or sexual orientation, whatever the politically-corect term is.

Here’s how it works:

1. Log on to your Facebook account.

2. Click on “status.”

3. Type in “hashtag pride “ (#pride).

4. Click on “post.”

5. Check your post. If what you typed in appears in rainbow colors, you’re LGBT. If the characters are in black, you’re hopelessly straight!

Senator Pia Cayetano: Air Korean Telenovelas In Korean!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Senator Pia Cayetano on Monday said the government broadcast stations should consider airing children’s programs in English to help them develop proficiency in the language at their young age, saying that the new normal due to COVID-19 will demand this skill from many Filipinos.

“Can we start showing a lot of cartoons and family-friendly materials on our government stations. Bakit ba kailangan i-dub? A language is learned earliest at their youngest. The earlier you are exposed to a language, the earlier you can pick it up,” Cayetano said during a Senate hearing focused on futures thinking.

But Cayetano also took a swipe at TV broadcadt stations that show Korean telenovelas, dubbed in Tagalog. “Keep them in Korean and let Filipinos learn a third language,” she said.

Korean dramas started  broadcasting in the the Philippines since 2003, beginning with GMA Netowork’s “Bright Girl.” All Korean dramas go through the process of localization: re-dubbing, pre-editing, post-editing and finalization before going on-air.

Cayetano wants to change that.

So gird your loins, K-fans and enthusiasts. Your kids will learn English from cartoons while you learn Korean from your favorite telenovelas!

Wouldn’t that be lovely?
