No Internet Throughout Entire Philippines On May 8 & 9

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – If you will be surfing the Internet on Sunday and Monday, May 8 & 9, you will notice that you will not be able to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media accounts anywhere you are in the Philippines. It has something to do with the Philippine elections.

According to the rules of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), candidates are prohibited from campaigning the day before and the day of the elections. The last day for campaigning is Saturday, May 7th.  It is when all candidates will be holding their final rallies, or ‘miting de avance.’

But in this Internet world and the accessibility to social media, it would be almost impossible for the COMELEC to monitor unlawful campaign activities which may be done by candidates and their supporters through Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and other social media accounts.

So, to ensure that there will be no campaign violations, Internet connectivity will be shut down throughout the entire Philippines from 12:01 a.m. on May 8 until 11:59 p.m. on May 9.

If candidates or their supporters have last-minute appeals to the voters, they are advised to do so before the strike of midnight on May 8.

Hurry!

Dim Sum: Donald Trump Commemorates Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month

imageNEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) –  Yesterday, presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump tried to endear himself to Hispanic voters by celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a bowl of tacos at the penthouse suite of his New York Trump Towers. That was lunch.

Realizing that May was Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month which commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, he had a different idea for dinner.

To celebrate the occasion, and in an effort to win the crucial Asian American vote in November’s presidential elections, Trump asked his personal chef to serve him some dim sum for dinner.

The real estate mogul has been very critical of China in his campaign speeches, but to set the record straight, he said, “I love the Chinese!”

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – It has long been rumored that a remake of the 1993 film, “Joy Luck Club” was about to go into production, with the Asian American community eagerly anticipating to once again see Amy Tan’s novel on the big screen.

The film’s story line features a series of flashbacks in which four young Chinese women born in America and their respective mothers born in feudal China, explore their past. This search will help them understand their difficult mother/daughter relationship.

The original cast included Asian American actresses  Kieu Chinh, Tsai Chin, France Nuyen and Lisa Lu as the mothers; and Ming-Na Wen, Tamlyn Tomita, Lauren Tom and Rosalind Chao as the daughters.

Today, Hollywood Pictures confirmed the rumors and announced it would start filming in early June for theater release on Christmas Day this year.

The production company said that because of the lack of Asian and Asian American actresses in Hollywood, it has assembled a powerhouse cast who will be playing the mothers.  They are: Tilda Swinton, Emma Stone, Laura Dern and Patricia Arquette.

Hollywood Pictures did not reveal who will play the daughters, but it is rumored that Jennifer Lawrence will play one of them.

In addition to going for best actress and best supporting actress Oscar nominations, Hollywood Pictures is confident the remake will win big in costume and make-up.
