MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – He is a news anchor on a morning radio show and a prime-time television broadcast.  He was also a former Vice President of the Philippines. But that doesn’t mean he can’t be ignorant about the LGBT community, particulary about transgender people.

Last Wednesday, Noli de Castro earned the ire of the LGBT community and many netizens after making what was described as a discriminatory remark during his morning radio show.

In referring to Geraldine Roman who on May 9 was elected the country’s first transgender member of the House of Representatives,  De Castro said, “Di siya woman, di siya man. Eh di congressperson?”(Neither a woman nor a man. Therefore congressperson?)image

After being deluged with criticism over his remarks, De Castro immediately took a leave of absence from his anchoring job and flew to the Francisco Bay Area where he is expected to undergo a week-long sensitivity training on transgender issues at the Transgender Law Center.

“I don’t claim to know everything about transgender people, so I am open to be more educated about the community,” he said as he boarded a Philippine Air Lines flight to the City by the Bay.

(From the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD media reference guide: “Reporters should use the pronoun preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth. If that preference is not expressed, use the pronoun consistent with the way the individuals live publicly.” (see AP & New York Times Style)

When describing transgender people, please use the correct term or terms to describe their gender identity.

For example, a person who was assigned male at birth and transitions to living as a woman is a transgender woman, whereas a person who was assigned female at birth and transitions to living as a man is a transgender man. If someone prefers a different term, use it along with an explanation of what that term means to them.)

It’s All Over: China Has Annexed The Philippines

image.jpegBEIJING, China (The Adobo Chronicles, Hong Kong Bureau) – The territorial dispute between the Philippines and China is over. China has officially laid claim on the Philippines.

The claim ends years of dispute between the two countries over who owns the Scarborough Shoal, a group of oil-rich islands in the South China Sea.

He Jia, anchor for China Central Television’s (CCTV) nationally televised news broadcast, made the claim during a late Monday broadcast. She apparently meant to say that the Huangyan islands – known in the Philippines as the Scarborough Shoal, and claimed by both nations – is China’s territory.

“We all know that the Philippines is China’s inherent territory and the Philippines belongs to Chinese sovereignty, this is an indisputable fact,” the anchor said in the broadcast.

Instead of admitting to the broadcast error, the Beijing government announced that the Philippines has been officially annexed to China, effective immediately.

Neither President NoyNoy Aquino nor President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has made a statement on the Chinese announcement.

COMELEC: Change In Hash Code Was Mere Cosmetic

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – As the vote count in the May 9 Philippine elections reached more than 90%, the camp of vice presidential aspirant Senator Bongbong Marcos had asked to stop the count while seeking an investigation into a suspicious new script computer command allegedly fed to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) transparency server.

The Marcos camp said that the introduction of the command, known in technical jargon as “hash code” could have very well altered the vote count.

The unofficial vote count began with Marcos leading his closest rival, Leni Robredo, by almost 1,000 votes.  Marcos said that his vote count suspiciously started a downward trend right after the hash code was changed.

As of press time, Robredo leads the VP race by more than 220,000 votes, with almost 96% of precincts reporting.

Today, the COMELEC said that the introduction of the new hash code did not affect the data and vote count.  “It was purely cosmetic,” the poll body assured.

However, COMELEC declined to  disclose whether the cosmetic change was done by Mary Kay, Revlon, Kokuryu or some other cosmetic company.
