Duterte Press Briefing Aftermath: Major Philippine TV Networks Lay Off Their Reporters

HONOLULU, Hawaii (The Adobo Chronicles, Honolulu Bureau) – Two of the Philippines’ largest television networks, ABS-CBN and GMA 7 have announced that they will be laying off almost 50% of their respective news staff effectively immediately.

The lead competing networks made the announcement soon after President-elect Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said through his spokesperson that he will no longer be holding press briefings. Instead, he will be making statements or giving interviews through the state network, PTV.

Duterte has been widely criticized for his recent statement concerning murdered journalists. Some media outlets reported that Duterte was “endorsing” the killing of journalists. The mayor was also attacked by the press for “catcalling” female journalist Mariz Umali during one of his recent briefings. Umali herself she did not expect any apology from Duterte.

Since Duterte’s election, journalists have been swarming the mayor’s temporary office in Davao City, reporting on every single phrase that he uttered and calling him out for what they thought were statements or words that were inappropriate and insensitive. Duterte’s staff have repeatedly said that the mayor’s words are always taken out of context or misinterpreted for the sake of creating sensational headlines.

Since there will no longer be press briefings, ABS-CBN and GMA 7 both said there will no longer be any need to employ reporters to cover the president-elect.

Journalism groups have also called for a boycott of media coverage on Duterte.

Well now, the “boycott” is moot and academic.

Some of the laid off reporters have been re-assigned to cover the entertainment world, including the sensational team AlDub of GMA’s noontime TV show.

Campaign Funds: Donald Trump Seeks $30 Million Loan From Hillary Clinton

NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – Donald Trump is running low on funds and is afraid he won’t be able to sustain an effective campaign against presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

The Trump campaign has alerted the Republican brass that he will have to be more dependent on the GOP for money to see him through the fall campaign and win in the November general elections.

However, many in the Republican leadership were lukewarm to Trump’s feelers, especially those who didn’t want him to be the party’s nominee.

So, who is Trump turning to? None other than Hillary Clinton.

Trump, citing his long-standing good friendship with the Clintons, asked Hillary to lend him $30 Million.

So far, the Clinton campaign has raised $289 Million from individual donors as well as Super PACS, compared to Trump’s total of $60.9 Million.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee is putting up the Trump Hotel in Waikiki as collateral for the loan.

Sources close to Mrs. Clinton say that her camp is seriously considering the loan request on the condition that Trump will stop all negative attacks against the former Secretary of State, and instead focus on issues for the rest of the campaign period.

Fair enough.

Cincinnati Zoo Officials Sued By Harambe’s Family

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (The Adobo Chronicles, Berlin Bureau) – A lawyer for the family of Harambe, the 400-pound gorilla shot dead in a Cincinnati zoo says that a lawsuit is being readied in South Africa against zoo officials.

Harambe was shot early this week to save the life of a four-year-old boy who climbed through the barriers and fell into the gorilla’s enclosure.

The incident, which was captured live on video,  has sparked massive outcry from humans, branding it a ‘senseless death’. Many are placing the blame solely on the parents of the boy, calling for charges to be filed against them for parental negligence.

The lawyer told The Adobo Chronicles that arrangements are now being made with a cruise line to bring the parents of Harambe to America to personally file the criminal complaint against zoo officials. They are simply awaiting the issuance of U.S. visas to Harambe’s mother and father.

All lives matter.
