MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles®) – Now that Philippine President NoyNoy Aquino has all but confirmed he will anoint Interior and Local Governments Secretary Mar Roxas as his choice of successor, the unofficial 2016 political campaign for president is in full swing!

What would a Philippine political campaign be without the usual freebies to entice voters to support the respective party candidates?

Opposition party candidate Vice President Jojo Binay is way ahead of his rival. He has been giving away cell phones to supporters.  But he is upping the ante this time around and has switched from a basic Android cell phone to an Apple iPhone (see photo).FullSizeRender (67)

Roxas may not have as much money as Binay to be able to afford a matching expensive freebie, but at least he is keeping true to the campaign theme of  austerity and “Ituloy And Daang Matuwid” (Continue the Straight Path).  So he chose a simple freebie that he hopes will appeal to the greater masses of  people — the tsinelas (flip flops).

It wouldn’t cost  a whole lot for Roxas to make the tsinelas his campaign give-away.  His wife, broadcaster Korina Sanchez, has a huge leftover inventory from a previous campaign promoting her television program, “Rated K”.  And it is the perfect color symbolizing Roxas’ Liberal Party: yellow!

SINGER CHRIS BROWN INVITED BACK TO THE PHILIPPINES

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – After just ten days since his sold-out concert in Manila, Grammy Award-winning singer Chris Brown has been invited back to the Philippines. Brown is currently in Israel as part of his concert tour.

The unprecedented invitation came from no less than Leila De Lima, Secretary of the Philippines’ Department of Justice (DOJ).  It came in the form of a subpoena.

DOJ has issued a subpoena against Brown for allegedly defrauding a Christian church out of $1 million after he canceled a performance at a New Years Eve event and failed to return the money.

Brown’s name appears on the subpoena along with Canadian promoter John Michael Pio Roda after a $1 million estafa complaint was filed due to the singer skipping a scheduled musical performance for the Church of Christ in the Philippines, which is called Iglesia ni Cristo, on Dec. 31, 2014, at the Philippine Arena. Brown and Roda were reportedly paid $1 million in advance and canceled without paying any of the money back.

Ahead of the subpoena being issued, Brown, 26, was performing in Manila and was initially barred from leaving the Philippines on July 21 because of the complaint that was filed. While he was finally cleared to leave the country by the Bureau of Immigration on July 24, Roda was not.

Roda is planning a return concert for Brown as soon as he arrives back in Manila.  The concert will be held at the Philippine Arena. Concert proceeds will help fund the court case that will ensue as a result of the DOJ invitation.

It remains to be seen whether or not the upcoming concert will be able to raise the $1 Million that Brown owes Iglesia Ni Cristo, and then some.

JIMMY KIMMEL CHOKES UP DURING HIS BROADCAST BUT NOT BECAUSE OF CECIL THE LION

LOS ANGELES, California (The Adobo Chronicles®) – Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel choked up during last night’s broadcast in which he talked about the killing in Zimbabwe of Cecil, the lion, by an American dentist. He said that when he first heard the news, he had hoped that the killer was not American.

A video of the show’s Cecil segment immediately went viral and advocates for the prevention of cruelty to lions used it to express their outrage over the incident which has gained international attention.

However, Kimmel’s publicist clarified that the television host choked up not because of Cecil, but because of the hundreds, if not thousands of human beings killed each day in America — especially unarmed black men –and in other countries where extra judicial killings are not uncommon.

“Kimmel is very much a man who is not easily affected emotionally by  stories of animals being hunted and killed by poachers,” his publicist said. “It’ll take hundreds of lions killed at any one time before Kimmel would shed a tear,” he added.

The publicist appealed to netizens to stop re-posting the video because “it is hurting Kimmel’s reputation as a tough and unbiased journalist.”
