Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – She’s at it again, this Filipino news anchor Korina Sanchez, wife of Philippines’ Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas.

Many will recall that during the height of typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) last year, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper reported from ground zero in Tacloban, noting the government’s less than stellar response to the needs of the typhoon victims and survivors.  Sanchez then came to the defense of her husband — reporting from her air-conditioned broadcast studio in Manila — and said that Cooper did not know what he was talking about.

Another typhoon now threatens the Philippines. Typhoon Ruby is showing some considerable strength which could cause serious damage to the Philippines.

In reporting on preparations for Typhoon Ruby, Sanchez on the TV news show “TV Patrol” said that Filipinos can still pray to God to spare the Philippines by changing its course.  She wants the typhoon to hit Japan instead.

Here’s how the conversation between Sanchez and co-anchor Noli de Castro went:
Korina: Kaya pa natin idasal yan para lumihis (We can still pray so that the typhoon will veer away)
Noli de Castro: Sana ay hati na lang tayo. Kalahati sa Pilipinas, kalahati sa Japan. (Hopefully, only half the typhoon will hit us and the other half will hit Japan)
Korina: Puwede bang sa kanilang lahat? (Is it possible for the entire typhoon to just hit Japan?)
Noli: Huwag naman.(Hope not.)
Korina: Sa kanila na lang lahat. Parang mas kaya nila. (Let Japan have it all.  Looks like they’re more capable)

Sanchez seemed oblivious and unconcerned about the criticism over her comments.  She told The Adobo Chronicles: “Well, I’m a born-again Christian and I have faith that God will spare the Philippines from this super typhoon.  The Japanese are non-Christians so it is very possible that God will perform a miracle and divert the typhoon towards their country.”

Clueless in Manila, this Korina.

PHILIPPINE CONGRESS OFFICIALLY DECLARED “NO MAN’S LAND”

govManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – As the Philippines braced itself for Typhoon Ruby, the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) declared several areas of the capital as “no man’s land.”

As many as 10 districts (barangays)  and two major thoroughfares — Roxas and Espana Boulevards — were expected to experience severe storm surges and flooding. Declaring “no man’s land” means that people are forbidden to visit or stay in those areas for safety reasons.

The MDRRMO is tasked with notifying the public about potential danger and high-risk situations.

Last week, the MDRRMO declared both the Philippine Senate and House of Representatives as “no man’s land,” citing the fact that visiting the Congress buildings would pose a great danger to the taxpaying public.  An MDRRMO spokesperson said that crocodiles abound in both houses and that the public should stay away and refrain from being in contact with the legislators.

MDRRMO is reportedly also considering declaring the Malacanang (presidential palace) and the headquarters of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines as “no man’s land.”

PANTONE’S 2015 COLOR: TIKKA MASALA!

New York, New York (The Adobo Chronicles) – Every year, artists from every corner of the design world look to the Pantone Color Institute for guidance on what hue will reign for the next 365 days. Last year’s color, Radiant Orchid, a chirpy shade of lilac, was widely heralded as one that symbolized the economic recovery, optimism for humanity, and a sense of sophisticated purpose.

This year’s color is … drum roll … ‘Tikka Masala.’ Yes, as in Chicken Tikka Masala!

“This tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness,” Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said in the company press release. “This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

There was mixed reaction among members of the design community. Michael Martin Navarrete Bello, a noted Filipino American interior designer based in San Francisco, said “The reddish-brown color reminds one of rust, the grimy, gag-inducing type that lines corners or frat boy dormitory-style bathrooms.”

Social media has questioned what Pantone calls “a naturally robust and earthy wine red color” as “a color that makes you want to go to Olive Garden or order Tampax in bulk.”

Others, including the American Hotel and Restaurant Association applauded the selection of Tikka Masala as the 2015 color. “It will be a boost to our members’ businesses as we expect our customers and diners to be looking out for Tikka Masala in our menus ” a spokesperson said.

Update: The Adobo Chronicles would like to apologize for a major error in this story. One of our reporter interns apparently misinterpreted the color hue selected by the Pantone Institute. The corect name of the color is ‘Marsala,’ as in the wine Marsala from Sicily, Italy. We have fired the intern since the publication of this story.
