MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Liberal Party standard bearer Mar Roxas is claiming media favoritism.

The former Interior Secretary and President Aquino’s anointed successor is complaining that recent headlines and news stories in the country’s national media have been focusing on Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who is also a candidate for president in the 2016 elections.

Duterte has been making the headlines after a recent speech in which he cursed Pope Francis while criticizing the nightmarish traffic in Metro Manila.

Roxas asked: “Why am I not getting similar publicity when I, myself, have been using the exact curse words in my public campaign statements?”   To prove his point, he posted the following video on his social media accounts:

PHILIPPINE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE CALLS FOR CEASEFIRE IN WAR AGAINST CATHOLIC CHURCH

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – When Davao City Mayor and presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte cursed Pope Francis during a speech in Manila the other day, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) didn’t find it funny like many in the audience did.  Instead, it issued a strong statement condemning Duterte.

“When a revered and loved and admired man like Pope Francis is cursed by a political candidate and the audience laugh, I can only bow my head and grieve in great shame. My countrymen have gone to the dregs,” said Bishop Socrates Villegas, CBCP president.  He added:  “Vulgarity is corruption. When we find vulgarity funny, we have really become beastly and barbaric as a people.”

Well, the CBCP statement didn’t sit well with Duterte either.

The mayor called out the Catholic Church for its child abuse scandals, claiming he, himself, was a victim of child abuse by priests during his days at Ateneo de Davao, a Catholic university in his hometown.

Duterte virtually waged war against the Philippine Catholic Church, saying that “I have secrets, they have secrets.”

But after attending mass at a local church, Duterte, a Catholic, called for a ceasefire. “If you leave me alone, I will leave you alone,” he said, while urging his colleagues in Philippine Congress to pass a new legislation that would mandate the separation of church and politicians.

The CBCP is yet to respond to Duterte’s call for al ceasefire.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – For candidates running for public office, choosing a campaign theme song is almost as crucial as defining their campaign platform.

In 1992, then U.S. presidential candidate Bill Clinton chose “Don’t Stop” as his campaign theme song.  It is a song by the British-American group Fleetwood Mac, written by vocalist and keyboard player Christine McVie, and a single taken from the band’s 1977 hit album, ‘Rumours.’

Although the official campaign period for the 2016 Philippine presidential elections has not yet begun, candidate and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is ahead of the game. He has already chosen the theme song that will be played at all his campaign rallies, and he hopes, during his election victory party.

Duterte’s camp has just revealed that the mayor’s campaign video is now being filmed with no less than popular singer Britney Spears singing the theme song and background music.

The chosen song is one of Spears’ earlier hits titled “Womanizer.”

Filipinos will, of course, understand why Duterte has chosen the song.  In a recent statement on live television, Duterte admitted to being a womanizer, having two wives and two girlfriends.

“I’m just being true to myself,” he said.  “What you see is what you get.” (Well, that last statement happens to be an actual title of another song by The Dramatics!)

Here’s a music video of Spears’ “Womanizer.” (Parental guidance advised. Contains nudity)
