MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Manila will see a new international airport in 2035, according to Philippine government officials.  It will be named NAIA, not to be confused with the existing NAIA.

The existing international airport is named after the late Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., who was gunned down in 1983 upon his arrival at the Manila airport after years of exile in the U.S.

NAIA stands for “Ninoy Aquino International Airport.”

The future airport will also be called NAIA but is named after Senator Aquino’s son, NoyNoy, the Philippines’ current president.

The new NAIA  stands for “NoyNoy Aquino International Airport.”

In order to avoid confusion among pilots, airlines and travelers, the existing airport will be named NAIA-1 while the new airport will be called NAIA-2.

Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said that the decision to name the new airport after NoyNoy Aquino is to memorialize his 6-year term as president during which his administration pursued a noble path of Matuwid na Daan (Straight Path), his battle cry against graft and corruption.

The government is eyeing two potential sites for the new airport: Sangley Point in Cavite or reclaimed land in Manila Bay.

A study conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) showed the Philippines would have to shell out P436 billion to build the new airport.

PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT AQUINO READY FOR MARRIAGE

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The most eligible bachelor of the Philippines, President NoyNoy Aquino, says he is ready for marriage, adding: “If the right one comes along, why not?”

Early this year, the 56-year-old Aquino was rumored to be dating 26-year-old Pia Wurtzbach, the reigning Miss Philippines-Universe, after both were spotted dining in a Quezon City restaurant with a large group of friends and colleagues.

Aquino did not specify the gender of the person he wants to bring to the presidential palace (Malacañang) before his term expires in 2016, but everyone assumes it would be female since same-sex marriage is not legal in the Philippines. (But look at that pinky in photo above)

Is marriage ready for Aquino?

AQUINO PARDONS MARCOS!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The bitter political rivalry between the Marcoses and the Aquinos abruptly came to an end today, when Philippine President Noynoy Aquino granted absolute pardon to the late Ferdinand E. Marcos and his family, including Imelda Romualdez Marcos and their children, Senator Bongbong Marcos, Governor Imee Marcos and Irene Marcos.

All it took was a simple “I’m sorry” from  Senator Marcos.

On Tuesday, Aquino said the family of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos should say sorry to the Filipino people for the atrocities committed during martial rule. Speaking at the presidential forum of the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP), Aquino said that Filipinos would be open to forgiving the Marcos family for what former president Marcos did to the country during his tenure. “We are a forgiving people as a general rule.”

So on Wednesday morning, Bongbong Marcos said that on behalf of his entire family, he apologizes.

Being a man of his word, Aquino then issued an Executive Order granting absolute pardon to the Marcos family.

The pardon paves the way for the burial of the late Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ cemetery), something that the Marcos family had been seeking for a long time. Marcos’ preserved body currently lies in state in a refrigerated crypt in his hometown of Ilocos Norte.

An absolute pardon also frees the Marcoses of any liability in the numerous cases filed against Ferdinand, Sr. and his estate.  And, Imelda gets to keep her 3,000 pairs of shoes, or whatever is left of them.

Pardoning presidents for crimes committed while in office is not unprecedented in the Philippines.  Former President and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada was pardoned by his successor, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who herself, is now is under hospital arrest . Estrada was convicted of plunder while Arroyo faces similar charges.

Will Aquino pardon Arroyo next?
