Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Christmas, especially for Filipinos, is a time for giving, compassion and goodwill. So what did jailed Philippine Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla get for Christmas?
The three senators are facing plunder and graft charges for their alleged involvement in the purported diversion of their Priority Development Assistance Funds (more popularly known as the pork barrel scam) to ghost projects for kickbacks under the scheme of alleged mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles.
Revilla, who from the beginning of his incarceration has complained about prison food, was treated to a Christmas eve dinner (Noche Buena), courtesy of Via Mare, one of the top caterers in the country.
Estrada, who has been experiencing migraines because of the heat inside his prison cell, was given a portable airconditioner courtesy of Hitachi Corporation.
Enrile, known for his womanizing, was granted visitation rights from his mistresses or anyone of his choosing, at his hospital suite. Enrile is under hospital arrest at the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital.
In addition, Revilla and Estrada held a joint Christmas party at the community social hall at the PNP Custodial Center.
All these Christmas perks were, of course, courtesy of President NoyNoy Aquino, a devout Catholic, who wanted to show his humanitarian and Christian qualities.
As for Janet Lim-Napoles, she reportedly received a laptop and free Internet connection so that she could watch and re-watch the YouTube video of her daughter Jeanne Napoles’ 21st Hollywood birthday bash.
Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – There’s a new scandal brewing in the Philippines. It’s called Mistressgate (you know, like Watergate). The pork barrel scandal was so yesterday!
The scandal revolves around a dating service site on the Internet involving married people. It’s called Ashley Madison, described on its website as “the world’s leading married dating service for discreet encounters.”
Justice Secretary Leila De Lima, with full backing from the Catholic Church in the Philippines, is considering blocking the site from the Internet in the Philippines, arguing that extra-marital affairs could lead to divorce.
Both extra-marital affairs and divorce are illegal in the country, and is against the Catholic Church’s teachings.
Enter Vice President Jenomar Binay, with the backing of an overwhelming number of male politicians, from senators and congressmen to governors and mayors. “We have to protect freedom of speech and the integrity of the Internet,” Binay said, as he and his fellow politicians vowed to block any move by the Justice Department to ban the married dating site.
Observers say that this is looming as the greatest political and religious comfrontation the Philippines has ever seen because it cuts right through the country’s pervasive yet hush-hush machismo culture.
Most of the politicians backing Binay are known to have mistresses, publicly or privately. Including Binay.
Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Feisty Philippine Senator Miriam Santiago is proposing an additional penalty for politicians found guilty in the pork barrel scam that has cost the country some Ten Billion Pesos in taxpayer money, and she is taking a cue from American singer Miley Cyrus.
Cyrus recently enraged netizens after she posted Instagram photos of her pet pig Bubba Sue getting a royal treatment — a pedicure. The photos showed Cyrus holding Bubba Sue while another person was painting the pig’s hooves with engine-red nail polish. Many commented that this constituted animal abuse.
Today, Senator Santiago proposed that every male politician convicted in the pork barrel scam be given not just a pedicure but also a manicure in pig pink nail polish — and not just ordinary nail polish, but permanent, indelible paint.
Santiago said this penalty will be a life-time reminder for the pork barrel scammers of their horrible crime, while giving the scammed taxpayers a way to easily identify those who pocketed their money.
“These politicians are pigs,” Santiago told reporters, “and they should be treated as such.”
The senator however emphasized that her proposal is in no way an endorsement of what Cyrus did to poor Bubba Sue.
