President Aquino Tells Philippine Mayors: Time For Payback

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – In an unusual display of his administration’s anti-corruption mantra of Daang Matuwid (straight path), Philippine President NoyNoy Aquino told the country’s mayors that it was time for payback.

In a campaign appearance for the administration’s candidates for president and vice president, Mar Roxas and Leni Robredo, Aquino reminded the mayors of the funds they received from the national government, and that if they wanted to continue receiving funds, they should vote for Roxas and Robredo.

As far as we know, the funds never belonged to Aquino or his administration.  It belonged to the Filipino taxpayers.

Daang Matuwid redefined by Aquino himself.

Baguio City Taxi Drivers: “We’re Being Robbed By Our Passengers!”

imageBAGUIO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – In most cities in the Philippines, taxi riders complain about drivers “robbing” them of hard-earned money, either by tampering with the fare meter or taking the long and winding road to the passengers’ destination.

Not in Baguio City, the summer capital of the Philippines, which celebrates a huge cultural festival this entire month of February, the Panagbenga.  The annual flower festival is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of tourists to this  city which boasts of San Francisco-like weather.

It is the other way around: passengers robbing taxi drivers, with the full blessing of the government’s transportation agency!

It would have been a huge opportunity for taxi drivers to earn more income, except for one thing. They’re actually losing 5 pesos each time they take on passengers.

Plastered on the windshield of all Baguio City taxis is a sign that says, “Taxi Fare, less 5 pesos.”  So if your final fare as per the taxi meter is 100 pesos, you actually will only pay 95 pesos.

There is a logical and legal explanation to all this, but it is of little concern to the taxi-riding public.  What’s important is the 5-peso saving each time someone rides a cab.  After 20 taxi rides, you’ll have enough money to buy you a Starbucks espresso!

Internet Speed: Another World Record For The Philippines

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) –The Philippines is among the worst performing countries in the world in terms of internet LTE speeds and coverage, according to a new report released by OpenSignal.

The Philippines ranked seventh slowest in LTE speeds and fourth worst in terms of LTE coverage, as of February 2016.

LTE, or Long Term Evolution, is a communication standard that is used to measure speed and coverage for cell phones and other mobile devices.

“Once again, we take pride in our country achieving a world record,” said Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Joseph Abaya. “It just goes to show that our government’ s efforts towards a straight path (Daang Matuwid) is working and contonues to earn for us the world recognition we always aspire for, “he added.

The National Telecommunications Commission which oversees the country’s telecommunications industry is under the administrative jurisdiction of the DOTC.

Under the Aquino administration, the Philippines has also held the distinction of having the worst airport (NAIA) and traffic gridlock in the world.
