LOS ANGELES, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Win or lose, Filipino champion boxer Manny Pacquiao says his May 2 fight with American Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be his last. Then he will focus on his bright political career.
Pacquiao is a sitting congressman, representing his Philippine province of Saranggani. Despite his reputation as one of the top absentee members of the Philippines’ House of Representatives, Pacquiao remains extremely popular among his constituents and the rest of the Filipinos who love champion boxers and beauty queens.
In the U.S., politicians have started declaring their candidacies for the 2016 presidential elections. Pacquiao, on the other hand, has officially declared his candidacy for president of the Philippines in 2022.
The boxer made the announcement today through his promoter Bob Arum, who said that his protégé will seek the presidency in 2022.
The Philippines’ constitution sets the minimum age qualification for president at 40. Pacquiao is 32, making him ineligible to run for president in the next scheduled elections in 2016. The presidential term is six years, so the boxer is definitely qualified to run for president in 2022.
Between his May 2nd fight and the start of the 2022 Philippine presidential campaign period, Pacquiao is expected to continue pursuing his other passions as a playing basketball coach and as a Karaoke king. He certainly wants to do it, in his own words (copied from Frank Sinatra), “My Way.”
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Their wedding last December 30 was dubbed a “Royal Wedding” by Philippine standards. Television superstars Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera tied the knot in church ceremonies officiated by eight bishops and seven priests, with no less than President Aquino standing as Best Man. The bride looked queenly in a Two Million-peso gown, emerging from a fully-refurbished antique Mercedes Benz.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – “Every day, America needs a champion, and I wanna be that champion.” With those words, former First Lady Hillary Clinton officially declared her candidacy in the 2016 U.S. presidential elections.
