Why Filipinos Would Have Been As Happy If Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach Were First Runner-up

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – For a full four minutes, Filipinos were perfectly happy that their representative to the 2015 Miss Universe Pageant was first runner-up. Even Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach who now wears the crown on her head was standing comfortably in the background with second runner-up Miss U.S.A. as Miss Colombia basked in the glory of being (erroneously) named the most beautiful woman in the universe. Wurtzbach had accepted her second prize status as her fate.

For Filipinos, being first runner-up is as important as being the winner. (Even the pageant itself recognizes the importance of being second: “If for any reason, the new Miss Universe is unable to fulfill her duties, the first runner-up will become Miss Universe.”)

To validate our point, we turn our attention to Dr. Jose Rizal, the beloved national hero of the Philippines. His imposing monument, unveiled over a century ago,  stands in the middle of Manila’s — and Asia’s largest — urban park, Luneta. It is among the most revered and visited monuments in all of the Philippines.

Not too many people know, unless they googled it, that the monument was not the winning entry but rather the first runner-up in an international competition to select the best design.

The monument was designed by Richard Kissling of Switzerland. The first prize in the contest was the design by Carlo Nicoli of Italy.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Philippines Cuts Diplomatic Ties With Colombia Over Miss Universe Fiasco (Video)

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Since July  5, 1946, the Philippines has had a great diplomatic relationship with Colombia, with foreign embassies established by both countries locally. But it took one despicable act on the part of some Colombians for the Philippines to immediately sever its ties with the South American country.

On New Year’s eve, while most people around the world were lighting up fireworks to welcome 2016, some Colombian sore losers chose to light up the Philippines’ Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, Miss Universe, and pageant host Steve Harvey.  Well, not them in person, but their effigies.

The group of Colombians can’t seem to get over the fact that their representative to the recent Miss Universe Pageant, despite being temporarily crowned Miss Universe, was, in reality, the first runner-up.  Harvey misread the cue card and announced that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez had won the crown only to correct himself minutes later to say that Wurtzbach was the actual winner.

Filipinos are a loving, hospitable and laid-back people, but when it comes to their beauty queens, it’s a different story. Anyone or any country that humiliates or offends their Filipina pageant title holders will certainly suffer severe consequences. Yes, even the cutting of diplomatic ties.

As of press time, the Colombian embassy in Quezon City was still occupied by their diplomats. They are still processing the shocking news they received from the Philippine Foreign Affairs Department.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Just as Filipinos thought that their grand slam in winning 2015 international beauty pageants had ended with the crowning of Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach as the new Miss Universe last week, yet another Filipina, Leren Mae Bautista was crowned Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International 2015 on News Year’s Eve in Malaysia.

This latest crown gives the Philippines a total of 6 international beauty titles in 2015.

Others crowned were Lorraine Maniego Colis as Miss Globe, Angelia Ong as Miss Earth, Cindy Madumma as Miss Scuba International, and Trixie Maristela as Miss International Queen (the largest transgender beauty pageant in the world).

Indeed, Filipina beauty queens are cursed, but in a good way!

Congratulations, ladies!
