SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Some 300,000 people are expected to descend upon Castro Street in San Francisco’s gay district on Sunday for the annual Castro Street Fair. This year, organizers promised there will be more booths and booze, and dozens of commercial vendors selling non-gay merchandise.
The all-day festivities will commence with a mass to be held at The Most Holy Redeemer (MHR) Church on Diamond Street in the heart of the Castro.
The Catholic parish is home to many gay Catholics living in the district and elsewhere in San Francisco and the East Bay.
For its Catro Street Fair edition, Sunday’s mass will feature Rowan County (KY) clerk Kim Davis who will address the congregation in lieu of the usual homily by the pastor, Father Matt Link.
Link told The Adobo Chronicles that MHR’s invitation to Davis, who spent time in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, is in keeping with the parish’s welcoming and all-inclusive policy and reputation.
“All are welcome here — gay, straight, children, pets, Catholics, non-Catholics, Agnostics, Atheists, and yes, even bigots,” Link said.
After the mass, there will be an opporunity for the congregation to dialogue with Davis at the pancake breakfast in the church’s auditorium.
Suggested donation at the door is $6.99 per person, but no one will be turned away for inability to pay.
