ANGELES CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – There’s a Karaoke bar in every corner of every major Philippine city,  and there’s a Karaoke equipment in every mall and every home.  It’s no wonder Filipinos continue to excel in the music world, both  locally and abroad.

But a major Philippine city, Angeles, has waged war against Karaoke, in public and in private.

The Angeles City Council has just passed Ordinance No. 366 regulating the sound levels of Karaoke equipment in an effort to contain the discomfort and disturbances caused by unregulated use of Karaoke and amplified sounds, especially in the unholy hours.

The new ordinance also lists songs than will be permanently banned from Karaoke bars and home equipment — songs that are directly linked to violence and murders in the Philippines.

The banned songs include: Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way,’ Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You,’ Idina Menzel’s ‘Let It Go,’ John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads,’ and Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline.’

So the next time you go visit Angeles City, especially Karaoke bars,  stay away from those songs. It’s for your own safety.

KARAOKE SINGING LEADS TO MORE DEATHS IN THE PHILIPPINES: COULD IT BE FRANK SINATRA’S ‘MY WAY?’

imageTACLOBAN, Leyte (The Adobo Chronicles) – Two men and a woman were shot dead by a soldier inside a videoke bar in Jaro, Leyte early Thursday morning, police said.

The victims were identified as Andres Cadapan, Joselito Sunico, and Lea Mae Jamito. The woman worked as a waitress in the bar. Another waitress, identified as Maria Fe Puasa, was also injured in the incident.

Based on police investigation, the incident occurred after the bar owner Alejandro Molabola reprimanded PFC Baltazar Nacion for singing too loud. Instead of listening to Molabola, Nacion mauled him, which led to a commotion after some of the other customers went after Nacion.

Nacion and another soldier escaped after the commotion. They later returned and Nacion allegedly fired at the customers and the two waitresses.

This is not the first time that people were killed in karaoke bars in the Philippines. In fact, police records show that there is one karaoke song that is considered the ‘deadliest’ of all: Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way.’ Is it because of the song’s lyrics, ‘the final curtain?’

The Adobo Chronicles, however, could not confirm whether the song that Nacion sang was ‘My Way.’

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Continuing with our Adobo Chronicles’ Philippines tour, here are the top 10 signs that will remind you that your’re in Manila:

  1. Everybody calls you ‘Sir.’
  2. Security guards don’t carry pistols. They carry AK-47s!
  3. Entering a mall is like going through airport security check. Each and every time.
  4. A hotel restroom attendant turns on the faucet for you and hands you a paper towel. If you’re lucky, you get a neck and shoulder massage.
  5. Your hotel’s café is packed during the buffet breakfast each morning– with Balikbayans (visiting Filipino expatriates). They fill up their plates like food is going to run out by the time they go for a second serving.
  6. Your Filipino friends won’t answer your telephone calls but will respond instantly to your text. They will greet you, “Gud-am”(Good morning). Hey, phone calls are expensive!
  7. Why spend money to go to a karaoke bar when you can go to the mall and sing at no charge? You might even become a YouTube sensation!
  8. The price of a cup of coffee at your hotel is 175 Pesos. That’s twice the price of a grande at Starbucks!
  9. Even in 90-degree weather, people don’t need airconditioning in their homes. They just go to the malls.
  10. Your restaurant server apologizes for the delay in getting you your check. He says, “Sorry sir, your check is being reprinted.” And you can only hope you’re not being charged twice!

“It’s more fun in the Philippines!”
